It's not really open world. You still have to go only one direction. It's not like let me stop and go do this side quest.

I don't think it's supposed to be open world, but the environments themselves are supposed to be larger and less tunnel like to give you multiple ways to get through an area.

Another video. Same area, but this guy approaches it different. This guy knows how to use the rope. Must watch!

It does but to me it looks like they cheated on the 2 most important things with ighting and shadows.

The reflections just reflect with very if any direction. That leaves the landscape flat and lifeless. The shadows are some of the hardest you can produce without it just being black, lack of any soft edges and again reflections off object outside the shadow which will disrupt it's draw.
