I think it will under perform the Jedi Fallen games for sure.

Before Bonkers goes white knighting bonkers again, here is why.

There are certain things you need (not all, but some) to have in a Star Wars game, and the trailer does not show them.

1. The Force - that is the foundation of what we know Star Wars to be.

2. Jedi/Sith - Users of the Force

3. Characters we know - You have to be able to relate to something. This is why Jedi Fallen did well. The Jedi brought us in, and then they hit us with characters we knew. Even if just a sprinkling. This is also why The Mandolorian worked, they were know from animation and movies. The trailer did toss out some familiar bad guys, and a frozen Han Solo.

4. Locations we know - New planets are great, and it does look like from the trailer we are getting some. Tatooine and Corvus look to be in it though, so players will get grounded with stuff they know.

5. They also look to have the Empire, but the Rebellion is missing from the trailer. Mentioned, but not seen.

Some of those above reasons is why one of the best Star Wars shows put out struggled - Andor. Really great series, if you have not watched it.

If Rockstar made this, it would be a slamdunk . With Ubisoft, my faith is squashed some.

I would agree with a slight modification: you either need the top basket or the bottom basket; you don't necessarily need both.

Put another way, if you have all of the space magic, players will likely be ok with new characters and settings.

If you have all of the nostalgia bait in the setting, players will likely be ok playing a Firefly-esque rogue in that setting.

Have both baskets? You'll likely sell like crazy no matter what. Have one basket but not the other? Make a solid game and you'll be fine. No force and no nostalgia? Now you've got problems.

when you prioritize checking the right boxes over actual story telling your video game/movie is likely to fail.

the problem is when the video game/movie flops it’s because of an ism/phobic ….not because its preachy and boring. people are waking up to this and pushing back with their wallets. Ask Disney. Ask Marvel.

South Park nails it

This isn't just true when it comes to checking the diversity and inclusion boxes - it's also true when checking narrative boxes as well. It's why Star Wars sucks. They're so obsessed with rehashing the same things over and over. Always go to Tattooine, always some super weapon, always some skywalker relative or mystery about who someone's mom/dad are, etc. They can't move on

When I read that they brought back Palpatine for the latest shitty movie I died laughing. Shameless and desperate arse pull. Crazy to me how there are literally 2 good movies out of 11 (12?) in the series

KOTOR and the Respawn games (Fallen Order and Survivor) were both better than any of the movies because they don't fall into the trap I outlined above. They'll give you brief fan service moments like fighting with Vader in the latter games, but for the most part, they're wholly self contained narratives that are able to make the most SW's extensive universe in ways that aren't tropey and recycled for the 5th time

Oh god, I can just picture it now

She inevitably turns out to be a Force user. After a brief demonstration of her power:

“Whoa! So guess who can use the force now?” *fist bumps the little creature*

The protagonist is so homely. No one wants to play a female character that is below average to average looking.

Sadie Adler was an awesome female character arc.

While she’s by no means gorgeous, I would be willing to bet that she’s more attractive than the last woman the majority of people complaining about her looks, fricked

Because if you polled people and asked them “what’s more important to you, the attractiveness of who you sleep with, or the attractiveness of the protagonist you play in video games”, I have to think “who I sleep with” would win in an absolute landslide.

Look, if she were a fricking bridge troll, fine. But she’s a perfectly decent looking girl next girl type. It’s not a big deal. And yet people seem to be aghast at the idea of playing anything less than a supermodel.

Just, appears to me, like utterly contrived bullshite handwringing.

i wouldn’t focus on her attractiveness level in this discussion. it’s more of a byproduct of the frustration people have with the utterly unexciting storyline, it seemingly being devoid of a lot of Star Wars universe lore, and being developed by a studio that has churned out a lot of turds in the last decade. mixed in with backlash against Bonkers’ unnecessary virtue signaling.

If people want to whine about any of those things, I would have no issue with it. In fact, I would have absolutely nothing to say, as I don’t know the first thing about this story, as I’ve not so much as watched the trailer. And beyond that, I’m happy to shite on Ubisoft right along everyone else.

But that’s not what that post was bitching about, which was why I replied.

Damn right she was. Rockstar knows how to do it, that is why I am not worried with the female lead in GTA VI. I expect Lucia to be freaking awesome, and not a single one of us will care she is female.

What makes me laugh is this new push by Hollywood/entertainment to push mid-30s millennial females as the apex of female presence.

Why would Travis Kelce date Taylor Swift? She's okay but you can't tell me he couldn't pull a far more attractive woman than her and I refuse to believe money is a factor. It's all about the demo she appeals to (mid-30s) and to signal to younger women they can't wait forever to settle down because they're still "hot".

This mid-30s females shtick is cringe and completely inorganic IMO. No Sydney Sweeney or younger women.

In spite of your implication, my "motivation" is that there is plenty to critique in games/the gaming industry without wasting time on trivial, counterproductive silliness like that the kinda cute protagonist isn't quite sexy enough, so I'm "motivated" to counter it to encourage better discourse.
