I won't finish the main story till this evening (starting from point of no return), but to me, Nier and RE7 (in VR) are better so far. Nioh is up there too, though it was a bit of a letdown

I think OP is right. Most of the time, I prefer a more focused story to open world because most open world games are just filled with fluff.

Forgot about RE7. Haven't gotten to that either

I'm about halfway through Nioh and it's good fun but not GOTY material imo. Bloodborne is the peak of that genre

The side quests are pretty forgettable in HZD. If they had put some depth and meaning in them, game would have been amazing. The gameplay was awesome, the narrative is really intriguing, the world is beautiful and the machines are the show. I much prefer it open world, but man a lot of those side quests were bad.

tl;dr Open world works, make optional content better

Yeah I'm with you. Fun game with some cool twists on the genre (which is apparently called Precision Action RPG now), but not enough environmental variety, enemy variety, or story for me. I'd rather see Team Ninja make another Ninja Gaiden game. Bloodborne is the game of the generation for me right now

Nier is my GOTY so far. A very special experience. Games like that don't come often, and I'm glad to see it's so successful

I think both of those are better games than Horizon. Nioh is a game I enjoyed more but isn't as polished.

I agree with the side quests. They feel empty and meaningless other than leveling up but a few have been fun and enjoyable such as the osram junkyard village or the signal at the top of the mountain allowing nice machines.

I disagree with everything else though. Like already stated if you don't like them don't do them. I pick and choose my side quests depending on if they interest me and the corrupted zones are fun when I'm just looking for a fight. I also enjoy grabbing the metal flowers and bank collectibles

I really think this structure would've moved the game from the "solid" category to the "great" category.

No matter how much you keep trying to knock down the game it doesn't change the fact that for most people including me, it was great.

There was no part of this game that ever bored me. Just running around doing nothing was fun with the gameplay and graphics of the game.

I'm going to get shite on, but it's almost as if they copied far cry primal.

The story is great, but it's like I've played this before. And yes, no need for all the side quest.

This is where I disagree. Getting around at times seemed like a chore.

The comparisons to Far Cry are fair. I'm a big Far Cry fan, so I wasn't bothered by it at all. It still seemed fresh to me, though.

Years of far cry and AC are why Horizon seemed so incredible to people. It's too similar to really outpace the others though

Just got out of the Zero Dawn facility. WOW. The main idea was predictable, but the whole operation was very cool. All the logs were awesome

Dude Forza Horizon is awesome as open world. It is great being able to just drive around.

Persona 5 IMO is better than Horizon, Zelda, and Nier. And I do own them all, but haven't finished one yet. It's hard to juggle so many great games.

The fast travel system is dumb. You shouldn't have to buy/craft travel packs in order to use the fast travel system.

You can build a fast travel pack that will grant you unlimited fast travel, just need to farm the parts/resources. Wasn't that hard.
