I'm of the Nvidia chipset fanbase.

If you're looking at the 550 ti line, consider the EVGA version here.

The shroud is better for the series and it has dual DVI OOB. For your build scope I would recommend it, unless you don't feel like skimping ~$40-50 on the video card to jump a few rungs on the ladder.

The drawback of this mentality is why skimp on anything if it's only ~$40-50 more? That's how you end up with a $2k machine

Yeah I definitely want to get a good one. I may have to end up buying something at best buy. Today will be the last shipment of parts so I'll be ready for build. Anyone know if OfficeMax or office depot carry cards?

DO NOT BUY AT BEST BUY your going to overpay there. Go newegg way better bang for your buck. Plus they have so many more cards, and the better ones.

I'll just see what they have at best buy and see if they will price match newegg.

Here's the computer wareagle1113 built. It was an experience for both of us.

Is that a 500watt PSU?

If so...

500W is plenty for his system.

I see the mid-tier all around horsepower so I can believe 500w working.

I wouldn't put less than 600w in a build, preferably 750w+ based on price point, extra features, and options to add to the build in the future. If you added another GTX 550 Ti in SLI that PSU wouldn't be enough, and that's a modest addition (besides RAM) to keep a comp relevant.

What's the fan situation in that setup? I see one, speculate 2 others at most (top + front, excluding the vid cards fan). Do you run something like Speedfan (or a mobo application?) and have it ventilated?

My system is slightly nicer than his, and it peaks at less than 400W. I went ahead and put a 550W power supply in for upgrading, but it's not necessary right now. Some really crappy power supplies don't actually output the power they advertise so a lot of people think you need a lot more power than you actually need. That being said, it is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your power supply.

Also, my build only has two 120 mm, and I run almost everything at 1080p and ultra settings, but my video card hasn't gone over 73C and my processor hasn't gone over 62C (I use CPU HW Monitor for temps). The 550Ti may bottleneck him a little bit, but he shouldn't have any heat issues.

It peaks at less than 400w? Well that's good, because you never want your system peaking on anything amirite. How much RAM and what processor do you have? What % do they climb up to?

I know we're on the same page but PSU's are typically skimped on IMO and a $20-30 difference is easy enough to pony up for.

Although those aren't terribad, I wouldn't let my PC get that hot for any extended amount of time...

Looks like the stock Intel cooler. Should be fine as long as he doesn't EVER overclock it.

Yeah but we haven't seen audodger's build...although given his comparison we can speculate it is the Intel heatsink/fan.

That's why I said I wouldn't stand for that over an extended amount of time...that's not BSOD/lockup temps, but it is damaging temperatures if the duration is longer than not.

Yeah, there are far too many decent coolers out there for under $50 to use the Intel stock one.

I posted my build a couple of weeks ago. My processor isn't as good as his (i3-2120 / can't overclock), but the video card is better (GTX 560). My system should run fine for several years even if the processor typically runs about 55C and the video card runs about 65 when gaming, right? I rarely play more than a couple of hours of PC games a day.

Sorry I didn't see your build thread, link me!

Those temps (55c and 65c) are fine, could be cooler but once you start approaching stretches of 70+, that's when you start chipping away at the lifespan of your hardware.

Also w/o knowing what kinda games you're playing, I'm sure you know your build and if it works for you then that's cool. If you're not doing anything else graphics/CPU intensive (music recording/production, multiple VM's, etc) then you should be good. I looked at the vid card you posted and it's a good card, but what made you go with the i3? Are you upgrading parts one at a time?
