Once you start getting up to the last couple of star levels or around gear level 8 it becomes a grind. My system after I level is:
1) level up main characters
2) level up secondary characters, I usually start with the highest stars.
I have about 15 max level toons and usually add a couple more each level. I hope they don't increase the level cap soon so I can work on some lower toons. The Yoda event should be back and I should now have the appropriate level characters to finish getting him.

I got him at 6 stars, need 80 more Mace shards to complete my 7 star jedi team.
I've been taking first place pretty much every day in arena now though with Phasma G9(L), QGJ G9, Rey G10, Royal Guard G9, Daaka G9 - all 7 stars. Phasma just needs 20 more stun gun parts to hit gear 10 and QGJ will hit 10 later today when free energy comes.

What's the best way to get characters without paying for them?
It can't be the stupid free silver packs right? Do you just have to beat/sim the same level 100 times until you get all the shards you need?

Yeah it's either beating the level by sims and collecting shards (you need like 400 shards of each though, so almost 1200 sims), or by unlocking with redeeming guild points/arena tokens/etc.

Yea, for characters only available from hard modes just have to do them every day and it takes a while. Rey is a little easier to get now though because her shards appear in the guild store pretty often. That's how I finished mine off.
I haven't spent any money or bought packs with crystals in a long time, just save up crystals from arena and buy 1 cantina and 2 normal energy refreshes a day and also try to get mk5 fusion furnaces from the shop when they show up if I have enough crystals.

I really hope they leave the cap at 80 for a little bit I would like to level up more heroes, I'm 79 and 1/4 of the way to 80.
