A mail runner (you'll get them when you get a governor sending an offer of peace treaty or declaration of war) can work as well, but the IWC is fastest.
You don't need any cannons because the goal is to never fire a shot. Just get to board as fast as possible.
Upgrade the hammocks and defense and sails asap on it.
Also get as many combat items as possible. Swords, pistols, cuirass.
Get good at fighting and if all else fails spam thrust

Ah the good ole game of getting the indian war canoe and spamming thrust. lol
This game was great, I think AC Black Flag took some ideas from this game to make their game as good as it was.
