MGS2 (controversial I know, but it was my first and blew my mind)
MGS3
MGS1
MGS4
MGSV

I tried peace walker and didn't make it 5 hours. The mobile games were dogshit by Kojima standards

IN

Top 5:
Metal Gear Solid
- First game I ever bought on day 1. Made me become an adult gamer after I had stopped for years. Only reason I bought a PlayStation. Played it for 17 straight hours and my wife watched the whole time. Amazing experience for its time.

Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
- Doesn't get the attention because it only came out on MSX2 and western audiences didn't get to play it until 2004, but that game was ahead of its time. Pretty remarkable mechanics considering it came out in 1990. I really have fun playing that game and still fire it up now and then.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
- Yeah, PSP game. But I really liked the art, direction, bonus tapes, and the replayability is excellent. The various motivations of the characters made the narrative more appealing to me than a lot of other Metal Gear games. Easily the most content available in any PSP game.

Metal Gear (1988 NES port by Ultra Games)
- First played this as a rental from Hollywood Video in 1988 when it was ported to the NES. When I saw the cartridge, it didn't have any box art or manual to explain what the game was. My friend and I thought it was a new Terminator game since the picture on the cartridge is a ripoff of Kyle Reese from The Terminator. We ended up using a 500-leaf notebook to draw the map of the game's screens, making notes of where goodies were and whatnot, to beat it. First NES game I played that wasn't a 2D platformer, sport/fighting, or RPG game. Truly something different although it has aged horribly.

Metal Gear Solid 3/2 (tie)
- Cop-out by me. I have more fun playing MGS3, but MGS2 is the more "metal gear-y" of the two. The soundtrack for MGS3 is sublime. I'm a James Bond nerd, so the game formatted in that style appealed to me. With MGS2, I admit I was one of those who was pissed the frick off when the switcharoo happened MGS2 is still one of the best examples of post-modern narratives in a video game. Just wish the Big Shell wasn't boring and Solidus had more development time. Still, the leap in graphics and mechanics from MGS1 to MGS2 (just 3 years later) was astounding. Plus, what other game can you get a golden shower, kiss a poster of a girl, and get yelled at for hiding in the girls' bathroom. I need scissors! 61!

Two worst:
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes
- Awful. It got Sharknado'd. I watch streams of this on Twitch just to laugh at the absurdity of it, so I don't *hate* it as much as mock it.

Metal Gear Solid 4
- This is the only Metal Gear game I flat out hate.

Is the phantom pain worth the buy and time? Its got 5 out of 5s and 10s on the reviews. Wondering if it's satisfying or just overrated.

Play MGS3 first. I'd recommend watching an MGS4 stream on Twitch with the Outer Heaven Network. Just so happens they're doing a Metal Gear marathon right now (currently on MGS1). 4 just isn't fun to play IMO.

If/when you want to play MGSV, Get the Definitive Experience so you get both Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain. I like the game, but jumping straight into it might leave you scratching your head about some of the revelations.

GZ & PP are direct sequels to Peace Walker. Might want to play/watch that one first, or get the story off the internet. I highly recommend playing it, but I'm in the minority as far as other Metal Gear fans go. Most seem to hate it.

The gameplay is really great. Can easily go guns blazing or stealth. Other Metal Gear games punish you relentlessly for getting spotted, but PP you can go ham.

It's overrated, though. The story is a mess and the ending is a grind. Game was affected in development and feels (is) unfinished.

I heard it brings back mantis who was my favorite character in the series. lol it got me interested, I'll look into 3 and would probably only get 4 if used for cheap somewhere.

Heard there will be a new one coming in 2017 made by a whole new production team

Yeah, Mantis is there in child form. He's kind of a creepy thing, but don't expect him to be nearly as interesting as his MGS1 persona.

You can get Metal Gear Solid HD Collection or Legacy Collection for pretty cheap at a Gamestop or something. HD Collection has MGS1, 2, 3, and Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 from the MSX.

Legacy Collection has all the above, too, plus Metal Gear Solid 4.

This is just a spin-off game. Has no direct correlation to the Metal Gear saga. It's just a means for Konami to produce a 4-player co-op shooter. Not saying it'll suck or anything, but it's definitely not "the next Metal Gear game". It's basically using the same engine, mechanics, and open world as Phantom Pain which is why they'll be able to produce the game so quickly.
