So, for xmas, I got my grandkids a PS4 (at my house for them to use). The reason was my Sony Blu Ray player went bad and I wanted to get another BR as well as have all the streaming service functionality (Netflix, et. al) + video games in one device.

Of course we opened it and tried to hook it up in the midst of the Anonymous debacle. Being Sony, the first infuriating "different" thing I noticed was that it's bluetooth only...i.e. it cannot be integrated with my universal remote.

Based on that and on Sony's general lameness around privacy/security + the fact that nobody in this story is a "hardcore gamer", is the X Box One a viable alternative? Will it work with a regular remote? Does its "blue ray app" work as well as actual blu ray? Are the games OK for casual gamers?

TIA

It will play your blue ray movies but the hair on people's heads will look bad. Thems the breaks.

Edited: I may be getting this question mixed up with the only thing I care about regarding the xbox one.

I'm confused, so you want to use your remote instead of the controller?

I havent heard of anyone doing that with Xbox, so im not sure it can be done. I dont know why you would need that though.

Its good for casual gamers. If you have Windows 8, its alot like that. There are some apps I wish the Xbox had like spotify. The Kinect is great though. Voice and facial recognition are fantastic.

I want to use my universal remote to control all of the blu ray/netflix/hulu/other functions. With the PS4, you cannot do that. It's only wireless interface is blue tooth. Obviously, I want to use the game controller to play the actual games.

Long story short, games are way down on the list of what I want to do with the equipment.

A key option through with the xbox if you want it, get Kinect and it will become your new universal remote. I had the old universal harmony remote to work the media room. Push one button and the magic happened. Now the Xbox One does it for me. Sometimes I use the controller, sometimes the Xbox remote and a lot of times I just talk to the Xbox and tell it what to do.

If you are using it in entertainment purposes, get the kinect version.

On a side note, PS4 is for a hardcore gamer is completely laughable at this point. There is more than enough quality games on the Xbox One.

Alright UH, settle down.

Neither system is really pushing a lot of exclusives at the moment (if you don't count indie games) , but Sony has a lot more potential than MS.

Glad I have both though.

I don't think it works for either device

Universal remotes work with the xbox one, but I think you might need the kinect for it to work

It amazes me at the made up bullshite some of you post.

Unless you can see the future, you have no way to definitively say this and with the recent sales news and Windows 10 info I would say Xbone has a bright future too.

Its great to be a gamer right now as both systems are trying to innovate more than they did the previous two gens combined.

Sorry to offend your MS console boner again.

None of us would be buying these consoles months after launch unless we did some sort of analysis of what the future may hold for each. As I have stated before, the established series that Sony has are why at the moment I think it has more potential.

Yep and that is why I have both.

Not me. Not today.

I just wanted to point out that yet again Taylor is posting his opinions as facts. Its on the same level as UH linking some obscure blog to back up his BS.

That original statement I made is, by nature, an opinion.

I will make sure to put "IMO" on the end of everything in the future as to not offend you in the future on this LSU football forum gaming board.

K pumpkin?

Blu Ray on both of them is a wash, maybe a slight nod to the Xbox One because of Kinect. Based on just movie's and streaming I would go with the Xbox One because it has more apps at the moment (better as well), could use your remote that you already have and if you buy the Kinect would have voice control as well.

Both systems have good games, I like PS4's lineup better but they both have something for everyone.

What games are your grandkids into?

+1

Plex on the One has been a life saver.

ETA:

Sorry...IMO
