Son wants a PS Vita to play some of his PS4 games remotely, Is this platform going to stay alive with Sony? From what I have read it doesn't seem it will be supported much longer if it is supported at all.

Sony isn't doing anything but 3rd party small developers have been supporting it and remote play isn't going anywhere.

If remote play is the only reason, may not want a vita. See if you have another device that can do it.

There's a ton of games for Vita and remote play does work very well. For its support, I don't believe it's going to get much love, but the psp store is still available to download purchases, so I wouldn't worry about that.
