Really want to try it but $500 dollars for everything I need is a bit too steep at this point. I'll reassess after 1 year

Not sure why people seem to think this is a bad price. Even the camera+move headset puts this around $500 total. Nominally that isn't far from the Rift, but that completely ignores that the Rift does not come with a motion controller, requires a big ole graphics card, and also does not have the room tracking of this thing (to be sold later).
So overall a flat $500 entry point for VR is relatively cheap. Sony also may have the best lineup of actual games for their system out of all three headsets.
