Robin looks like a fun moveset. A more aggressive Ness-type thing. I'm cool with that.

Nintendo Has A Rather Fantastic Super Smash Bros. Marketing Strategy
quote:

One of the most anticipated games of the year is Nintendo's next Super Smash Bros. game, with a somewhat abridged version coming to the 3DS this fall and a full console release for the Wii U promised by the holiday. It remains to be seen if the Wii U version will hit that target in the wake of Nintendo’s often sliding timetables, but Nintendo has done a great job marketing the game so far. So much so, that I thought it deserved a closer look.

Namely, a pair of videos were released this weekend exemplifying what I’m talking about. First, there’s a new character reveal showcasing returning fighter Captain Falcon, and newcomers Lucina and Robin from the Fire Emblem series.

Fighting games present a unique opportunity that other titles lack to reveal fighters like this one by one. But seeing as Super Smash Bros. is possibly the most beloved series out there and one with a seemingly infinite amount of characters to choose from, this tactic works extremely well. While it may come as no surprise when Mortal Kombat X announced that Raiden was returning for the new game, Smash Bros. has effectively built up this “new challenger approaching” reveal system that generates tremendous anticipation for the game.

As seen in the video, they were probably always going to have Captain Falcon in the game, as he’s a staple of the series, but stretching out his reveal until now left many guessing if we would return or be replaced. And the addition of Lucina and Robin delighted many Fire Emblem fans, and now that game boasts four characters from that series.

The second video is one Reggie Fils-Aimé made to the EVO 2014 audience ahead of the Nintendo-sponsored Super Smash Bros. finals at the show. In it, he expresses gratitude for the dedication competitive fans of the series have shown over the years, and offers a friendly challenge to them using lingo from the scene (“no Johns” means “no excuses,” a term coined via an excuse-making competitor from years past).

This is perhaps the most interesting aspect of Nintendo’s marketing campaign for the new Super Smash Bros, as they’re doing a complete 180 from EVO 2013, when they were at one point actively trying to put a stop to competitive Super Smash Bros. at the event.

EVO organizer Joey Cuellar explained how Nintendo almost wiped Smash Bros. completely from last year’s gathering:

“They were not only trying to shut down the stream, they were trying to shut down the event, the smash portion of the event,” Cuellar said. “It’s their IP, they can do what they want and they didn’t present us with any options to keep it open. We’re not going to press it any further, it’s their IP. We respect Nintendo’s decision to protect their IP, and we’re going to comply with their legal department completely.”

Nintendo eventually bent, allowing a Melee tournament to happen, then broke, also allowing it to be streamed online, but it was a messy affair, and everyone was extremely perplexed about why Nintendo would be trying to stifle competitive play of their own game.

Now, it seems Nintendo has reversed course completely, and is actually using EVO as a launching pad to generate even more excitement for the new Super Smash Bros. Yes, you could say that perhaps they just had a road to Damascus moment last year, and now they want to please fans, but the marketing opportunity is too obvious not to be an additional factor for them.

Nintendo has now figured out what Blizzard and Riot Games have known for years, that interest in the competitive scene of a game only increases interest in the game itself. Nintendo has even gone so far as to support Gamecube controller play in the new Super Smash Bros, something the fighting game community went crazy for.

Nintendo is learning, and between their character reveals and their newfound support of competitive Smash play, they really could not have concocted a better marketing campaign for the new game.

sounds like NIntendo is embracing the competitive community

Not according to the competitive players that got a hold of it during E3.

Nintendo is most certainly embracing the competitive Smash scene.

Sakurai, on the other hand, antagonizes them.

I almost feel a bit sorry for Nintendo at this point. They're putting so much energy into the competitive Smash scene to build hype for Smash 4, yet the competitive players did nothing but criticize the game's mechanics (and rightfully so). If the competitive players don't get on board, then Melee will continue to be the dominant Smash title at the major tournaments, while Smash 4 will fade away into irrelevancy along with Brawl.

The Nintendo executives will be scratching their heads, wondering why their crown jewel for the Wii U is being overshadowed at all the major events by a 13+ year old game.

Hopefully they change the mechanics and controls before the final product is released. If not at least the oppurtunity to patch it is there

Yeah, at least they can quirk the mechanics in this game, and likely will.

If the game doesn't experience a drastic overhaul in its mechanics, then it's a design decision, not an inadvertent error in game design. Many competitive players already feel this way, and are therefore doubtful as to whether the mechanics will be overhauled.

The roster and the character abilities look incredible, so it's difficult for me to not get excited and be at least somewhat hopeful that they acknowledge the core players and address their concerns.

Based on what I played at Best Buy, however, I just don't know - the game's engine just felt entirely too limiting and restrictive, and it's difficult for me to believe that such implementations weren't intentional.

To analogize this, imagine playing a muliplayer FPS game on your PC, yet the look sensitivity is locked at an exceptionally low value - so much so that you find yourself picking up your mouse and moving it across your mouse pad multiple times just to perform a 180 degree turn.

What specifically did you think it was restrictive of? Obviously wavedashing, but is there a certain class of characters that was restrictive, like speed or ariel characters? I've heard they nerfed Marth and Fox, but I'm hoping that Lucina is a pretty unaltered Marth from Melee, and maybe Falco can come to the rescue of Fox.

Aerial landing lag is a huge issue at the moment. More specifically, aerial landing lag when coming out of an attack. Landing lag after an air dodge is good, as it punishes those for avoiding air attacks and makes them more vulnerable on the ground if they decide to avoid the attack in the air.

However, landing lag on aerial attacks encumbers more experienced players who know the character movesets and know exactly what they want to do and how they want to do it. When attacking in the air and then landing, most characters will experience substantial amounts of lag when landing - more specifically, the amount of frames has drastically increased from the point your character hits the ground to the point when you're allowed to control your character again. Your character effectively becomes "locked" in a recovery animation after landing.

During the Best Buy event, I found myself mashing buttons on my controller, as all of my bairs, fairs, and dairs were corrupted with heavy amounts landing lag, and my characters would resultantly "stick" to the ground after performing an aerial attack. This slows down the game significantly.

Additionally, the overall control over characters just isn't that tight. In Melee, if you thought about doing something with your character, you could do it. In Smash 4, movements feel labored and tired, and the characters don't react well enough or fast enough to your input.

Would this be a bad thing for a character like Toon Link though (save the dodge)? Honestly, with him I like to stay in the air as long as possible with him, since his special moves are still very accessible from the air, and his arials are among the best in the game.

I played as Bowser, Wii Fit Trainer, Mega Man, Little Mac, and Pikachu. This isn't merely an issue with a certain class of characters, but rather an inherent problem with the way the engine is running.

Both have been nerfed. Fox was nerfed in Brawl, and the trend continues here.

Marth is slower, and again, experiences fairly significant landing lag on many of his aerial attacks. However, from the trailer, it appears that Lucina sports an almost identical moveset while being much faster as well.

A few of the remaining newcomers:

- Bowser Jr.
- Shulk
- Duck Hunt Dog
- Dark Pit (Pit clone)
- Dr. Mario (Mario clone)

Technically, there are four actual newcomers, as Dr. Mario is a returning character from Melee. This information was leaked last week via the images below:

It has been heavily debated for days as to whether or not these images are legitimate. Well, a few new videos surfaced this morning which essentially confirms the validity of the leaked images - LINK

The 3DS version releases in Japan on September 13th, and everywhere else on October 3rd.

The Wii U version is still targeting an unspecified release date for this fall.
