How accurate is that brickseek page? Shows 5 in Covington but just called and they said they had no stock. So are they lying?

I can't speak for that store in particular but it's pretty normal for a college kid working retail to not give one frick and lie about what all they have in stock just so they don't have to look it up. I've had it happen at Toy R Us, Best Buy, and Game Stop many times.

Apparently there's a big time shortage.

Retailers don't know when the switch will be back in stock

- 1.5 million units sold worldwide
- 500,000 consoles were sold in the US
- 360,000 were sold in Japan
- Europe 'isn't far behind'
- 85,000 units were sold in the UK
- 110,000 units were sold in France
- 89% of Switch owners have bought Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- this equates to 1.34m in sales, Wii U version not included

Most of those figures were for the first week on sale, so the number will now be higher. Nintendo says its aim was to sell 2m Switch consoles by the end of March - these figures suggest it is well on its way to hitting that target. Furthermore, Nintendo's financial reports count 'sell in' to retailers (and SuperData's estimates are sell-through), so it's possible Nintendo has already hit its target for the quarter.

Yea, I posted that in the other thread. The actual 2 million figure your article is referencing is when Tatsumi Kimishima said that they planned to ship 2 million by March 31st.

Which is pretty ridiculous to only ship 2 million in the first month. If they didn't change that plan they will be out of stock for a bit.

Sorry, not going to read through the Zelda thread when I don't have the game yet.

I don't know why people keep saying 2 million units at launch isn't enough. That's a ton of machines for a simultaneous worldwide launch by a company that only makes video games. It's not like they own production or have any other businesses to lean on while they spend money to make more systems. If they actually owned the factories that made all the computer chips and put the systems together that would be one thing but they don't.

Because it isn't a lot at all. They shipped more of the Wii U for example. This had way more buzz than the Wii U.

The damn PS4 sold 1 million in 24 hours in America and still was on shelves.

2 million worldwide for a month is silly.

The PS4 wasn't a simultaneous worldwide release so it's a poor comparison. PS4 came out in the US November 15, 2013, the EU November 29, 2013, and wasn't out in Japan until February 22, 2014. Of course it was easy for them to put out a million systems in the US b/c they straight ignored Japan for about 3 months. Nintendo isn't going to do that b/c they always sell a near equal amount of hardware and software in Japan, especially when it come to mobile systems.

Again, you must also take into account that Sony is a massive conglomerate that dwarfs Nintendo. They don't have all their eggs in the gaming basket so if they happen to overproduce a game or some hardware it isn't going to kick their quarterly earnings in the balls.

shite, Sony hasn't even treated the PlayStation line as a pure gaming system since the PS2. It's always been a way for them to also sell DVD players, BluRay players, and now home entertainment hubs. It's just not a good 1 to 1 comparison to be making b/c their systems are a product that are used to enter multiple consumer markets rather than being aimed purely at gamers.

That means nothing to me, when I just said one sold 1 million in 1 day and the other only produced enough to sell 2 million in a month.

Would love to see the numbers sony produced in the first month. I don't know if that is out there but I don't have time to dig. (4.2 mil sold in the first month and a half)

But I do understand what you are saying. I do. It's just silly to me that Nintendo continues to do this. This is not a one time thing. And in no way should the sells be surprising because it is not some crazy amount.

But you are probably right, this has always been about making the share holders happy.

The Switch has already moved at least 1.5 million out the door to consumers. They just aren't all in the US.

If you can't understand why one system launching in the US only vs another launching world wide is a massive difference that makes the two launches silly to compare I don't know what to tell you. FYI the PS4 sold 2.1 million worldwide from the Nov 15 US launch through Dec 1 in 2013 LINK. So it took them 17 days to sell 2.1 million systems during the holiday season. (There absolutely were shortages BTW, especially if you lived in Europe) Why again is having 2 million systems out during a 29 day span in time frame not known for huge retail sales such a terrible thing?

Also, I cannot emphasize enough that Sony is a FAR bigger company than Nintendo. It's much easier for them to pump out electronics b/c they have their hands in damn near everything making much easier for them to leverage manufacturing deals. The fact that they aren't a pure gaming company and the PS4 is not a pure gaming device are really big details that I just don't think should be waived off as if it's not a major factor.

Because that is not the point. Sony staggered launch and they still produced more, a lot more. If anything it shows that they were more prepared. They produced more with less stores to fill.

This isn't about the Switch not being on the shelf, it is about Nintendo under shooting it's amount it needed to produce once again. And with it being worldwide as you keep bringing up, why would they not produce even more? Than if they staggered?

I was never trying to compare sales. The only reason I brought up the sales figure was to get a grasp on how many they produced.

You need to realize that you're not quoting actual numbers, but a report from a research firm. They're estimating based on data they have.

Wait for Nintendo or a sales tracking service (NPD, Chart-track, Media Create, etc) before assuming. We do know actual numbers for Japan, UK, and France.

Nintendo Shipping Direct from China through Air

quote:

Nintendo Co. NTDOY 5.62% said it used aircraft to ship its new Switch videogame machine in its first month on the market, an unusual and costly logistics measure responding to unexpectedly high demand. Earlier, Nintendo said it shipped 2.74 million units of the Switch in the month after it went on sale March 3, up from an initial plan of two million. “We carried some of the Switches by plane in March to serve our customers more promptly,” a company spokesman said. He said Nintendo switched back in April to less-expensive sea freight to replenish store shelves.

quote:

Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda said further use of airfreight was possible because the item remains hard to find at retailers globally. “Air is a big profit-squeezer because it could cost additional ¥5,000 per unit,” or about $45, he said. Waseda Business School professor Atsushi Osanai said it was worth the price to get the product off to a good start.

Maybe make everyone feel a little better.

What is everyone doing for headphones while docked? I have mine in my living room on a monitor so I can play while others watch TV. I'm not about to run a 3.5 cable while it is docked and have a dog sling my Switch across the room. Just realized none of the controllers have headphone jacks and do not support Bluetooth
