Public events, Daily story's (hardest mode) will get you 2 shards or energy, farming Vanguard marks to purchase legendary armor (that you won't use) and break down, purchase exotic engrames from Xur and break down the item (if not your class or something you would use), dismantle legendary armor you're not using or don't plan on using and run the VOG just to get the Chests which can (most do) contain shards or energy. You can also get shards or energy from the Weekly nightfall.
The grind is real... So get to it.

Quickest way to do it is to buy leg armor (cheapest armor to buy) with vanguard or crucible marks. I had 200 vanguard marks, which bought me three leg armors that I broke down for 9 shards this morning.
