Playing Dragon's Dogma 2 made me realize I need to play this game again. There's a charm in it that Skyrim gave up to become a bit more accessible.

Every time I play I end up with a detailed spreadsheet of levels so I can max out the leveling system and have to do detailed planning at each level to make sure I do so adequately.

What an amazing game. About to fire up a new character now.

Walking out of the sewer for the first time is an all time moment for me. I was 13 when it came out and I had never seen a game like that or knew it was possible.

I can’t throw enough money at them if they remaster that. I know modders are doing the skyblivion project but who knows when that’ll come out

ETA: Umbra is the GOAT

Morrowind lovers would say the same about Oblivion.

Oblivion is one of my favorite games ever. I have it behind RDR2, The Witcher and Skyrim. I sunk so many hours as a teenager into Oblivion on my PS3, so many good memories.

Is DD2 similar? I've been watching reviews on it.

I'm convinced that the best way to play Oblivion is to turn the difficulty slider all the way down (or at least down to a certain extent) and not worry about min/maxing your build.

Oblivion moreso than Morrowind or Skyrim seems to demand players plan out their builds in advance

While they would, and I completely get the freedom and alien-ness that Morrowind had, I would argue that Oblivion is closer to Morrowind than Skyrim is close to Oblivion.

I hesitate to say it's similar, but there are some similarities. Gameplay is a bit different. Feel of the world is roughly the same.

Similarities:

- Completely open world with no guidance to get involved in main quest.

- World setting is very similar in time, technology, magic, fantasy setting.

- No real impetus to rush into the main quest. You can wander around the countryside and caves at random and fight enemies.

- You can kill whoever you want and deal with the consequences (I haven't tried to yeet a child off a cliff yet actually).

Differences:

- Leveling is completely different. In DD2 you just accrue experience and get assigned stats at each level.

- Combat is much more fast paced in DD2

- Magic system drastically different

- You can switch classes and abilities pretty much on a whim in DD2

- Oblivion is still leagues ahead as far as world building, fleshed out open world, and storytelling

I never played Morrowing but have probably 1000 hours in Skyrim and I agree. Skyrim was a lot more forgiving. Oblivion if you go in blind you're going to end up wildly confused about why you're getting your arse kicked about eight levels in.

They have a chance with Elder Scrolls 6. I think Skyrim fixed a lot of systems and expanded the player base but took away a lot of charm. Bethesda probably learned some lessons through Fallout 76 and Starfield.

If they take some of what made Oblivion amazing and some of what made Skyrim amazing it could be on another level.

Morrowind will give you directions by describing interesting rocks, then have you swing at and miss at a mudcrab for 15 minutes on the way there, and then you realize that sometimes the directions NPCs gives you is incorrect.

It’s a hell of a game, though. Genuinely

Bethesda’s games get worse and worse with each new release. No chance

I mean, Skyrim was a great leap forward with some flaws. Fallout 4 was a mixed bag. 76 was a disaster I think they acknowledge. Starfield had some good elements but overall fell flat, but it was a whole new IP and game system.

It's possible Todd Howard has lost his juice. We'll know when #6 comes out.

Other than the obvious graphical improvements, I have a hard time thinking of areas in which I thought Skyrim was an improvement over Oblivion, outside of the leveling system. Other than that, there were a host of areas in which Skyrim went backwards, especially when it comes to the quality of the quests, and particularly side quests, including guild quest lines.

Every single guild has amazing questlines in Oblivion, specifically DB and Thieves. I still remember the major beats and sequences from them 10+ years later

I couldn’t tell you a single moment from the Skyrim guild quests

I still hope that the Oblivion remake "leak" is legit. Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game and I thought it was far greater than Skyrim.

Oblivion and FO:NV are my two biggest “if you put out a competent remake/remaster, I swear I will pay you full price for it” games.

New Vegas is right behind Oblivion for me. I beat FO3 but was not a big fan of it. Decided to give New Vegas and loved the shite out of it.

Morrowind is superior to both Oblivion and Skyrim in nearly every way.

I would agree that Oblivion's leveling system is deeper than Skyrim, but the way the level scaling is designed, you are pigeon holed into leveling in a very min/max way to stay on pace with the enemies in the overworld.

Oblivion is an amazing game considering it released in 2006, but the art direction was always a turnoff for me. The NPCs are the stuff of nightmares and the world is too bright and generic fantasy-esque.

Skyrim's visual style is more in line with Morrowind.

In general, I find the leveling to be less restrictive, and the overworld is much more atmospheric/fun to explore.

The side quests in both games are about even for me, so it's a wash.

Shivering Isles is a much better expansion than anything Skyrim ever received for DLC. Nights of the Nine isn't really worth it.

Both Skyrim DLC packs are solid but not necessarily amazing.

Dragon's Dogma from what little I have played of it so far, the world has a very generic medieval Western European feel to it. The gameplay feels like the RPG version of Death Stranding where the "game" is just getting from point A to B due to limited fast travel options.

I put probably a hundred hours into a character in junior high and hardly made any main story progress.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth revisiting as an adult gamer - I remember thinking the combat was bad back then and they was before Souls had spoiled me.
