What are these?

Why would I want these?

Do you have these?

How big of a nerd am I if I buy these?

How poor will I be from buying these?

I have all the same questions myself.

What the hell do these things do?

I have no clue either, but I think they are basically collectibles that may or may not unlock content in various video games.

Never bought one, so I have no idea.

Video game version of beanie babies?

Nintendo

This answers all those questions. I borrowed one for Breath of the Wild and it gives you stuff like Epona the horse, armor, other random stuff. It is good to have one for that game. I'm not sure about any others though, but the link will show you any games amiibo features.

Different Amiibo unlock things in different games.

So like in Mario Maker every Amiibo you scan in turns the Mario sprite into that character. In Mario Kart several of them give you different character themed outfits. In Kirby Rainbow Curse the Kirby themed Amiibo give you little powerups. In Smash Bros you can kind of power them up to fight against to better hone your skills.

Most Nintendo WiiU/3DS published games that came out after the Wiiu/3DS versions of Smash use them in some form or fashion though not all Amiibo work with every game.

The easiest (and cheapest ones) to find are the Animal Crossing Amiibo. The hardest to find are certain ones from the Smash Bros line.

Most can be had from $8-$12 new though some of the new Zelda ones are $15 (they are quite a bit larger than the average Amiibo) and several of the rarer Smash Bros Amiibo can fetch a pretty high price on the secondary market.

I swear, I tried to read the wikipedia article on Amiibos and felt like I knew less afterwards than I did before.

Everything you listed.

I like collecting and they unlock cool items.

Edt: Do they need to do your laundry also? No.

Not many. Like 40. I started collecting characters I love, then just recently started completing waves.

I'll post my collection tonight.

Yeah I got a collection in the 40-50 range, really haven't gotten much since the Smash ones but I picked up a couple of the Zelda ones that just released.

How many Amiibos you have ruined because GameStop put the sticker on the cardboard?

Well.. this also depends if you use them or not. The ones I use are opened and the rest stay closed.

Edt: I really do enjoy the Amiibo hunt. Just walking in a Target, Walmart and GameStop to see which they have on sale/discount. You would not believe how each store has a totally different set of Amiibos until you visit everyone in your area.

Amiibos? None. Do you mean the boxes? Just hit the sticker with a blow dryer on low heat and eventually you can peal it off w/o much trouble.

I open all mine though and if you pull the plastic just right you can get them out w/o doing much damage to the box overall. Sure it won't be able to get unopened prices from collectors 20 years down the line but I'm willing to bet there will be people who are just happy to have the box at a less insane markup price.

That said, those damn boxes are a prime target for the wife's desire to declutter the house. I may have to redo our attic to have climate control just so I can hang onto more of my stupid crap that I love to hoard. Come to think of it, I could have a pretty kick arse gaming room up there...

Not if the sticker is on the product for a while. Also the Clearance stickers seem to do more damage than the normal gamestop stickers.

Yeah I keep all my boxes for the ones that are opened. But love having others completely sealed.

They aren't displayed anywhere, except the ones being used. Just keep them in a large container.

Plus I have a separate room just for that stuff.

I do that but my gaming collection has become quite ridiculous. Right now I have a Commodore 64 w/monitor (which I hook up older systems to), NES, SNES, N64, 2 Gamecubes w/Gameboy players attached, Wii, WiiU, Sega Genesis model 1, Sega CD model 2, Dreamcast, Atari Flashback 2 w/cart mod, Atari Jaguar, Jaguar CD, Xbox, Xbox 360, PS1, PS2, PS3, Gameboy, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Virtual Boy Gameboy Advance SP, DS, 3DS, PSP, GameGear, Sega Nomad, several Tiger Electronics handhelds, and a Pac Man plug and play. I probably have around 45 Amiibo and a few Lego Dimensions kits. No idea how many games I own overall but it's getting difficult to store them w/o putting it all in boxes stacked to the ceiling in the closet.

Then there are all the VHS tapes, DVDs, BluRays, CDs, cassette tapes, LPs, random old toys, and bits of sports memorabilia like baseball cards, jerseys, helmets etc, music equipment (guitars, bass, ukulele, bells, keyboard etc). I tried to make our office my room for all that shite but it just isn't big enough.

I'm lucky that I lived with my wife beforehand so she knew what she was getting into b/c I'm sure plenty of women would be pretty pissed if they finally moved in with their man only to find out half the house was dedicated to his Peter Pan syndrome.

Oh jesus. Yeah that is a lot of shtt.

I'm a PC guy really but love everything Nintendo. Also do not keep old out of date hardware since we can emulate everything now.

That is awesome really. The SO and I are going on 8yrs and lived together 5 of those yrs, maybe 6. She is in no way a gamer or likes anything remotely to do with our culture besides reading the Harry Potter series.

But she does support it because it is what I like. Also we have no children so its fun buying toys she says.
