Go read masters of doom. It's one of the best books I ever read. Even Romero has endorsed it and said it was very accurate.

The source code is free so anyone can mod it.
He released this as a warmup for some new project.
Just thought it was cool the creator of a 23 year old game made dlc for it.
Apparently doom still has a community. Go figure.
I hope IDKFA still works.
