Trying to setup xbox live for my kid. He has 360 and also kinect and I got wireless router set up. Does he need anything else? Does the system just pick up the router? I know this is probably elementary to most but I dont have a clue

YOu have to go in to the settings and have the unit find and connect to the router the first time.

If you don't have a password on your WiFi you should put one. And not just something like your kids name or birthday. Put something with 10 to 12 or more characters with caps, lowercase, numbers and symbols.

Do you have the newest 360 model? It should be black and probably called a "Slim". Look on the box...If it's a "Slim" model, it already has the wireless adaptor inside the console.

If it's an older model 360, you'll need an external wireless adaptor. Brand new, they run $100 and look like this:

You can get used ones at GameStop for cheaper (I think $60 or so) and they work just as good as a brand new one.

New Wireless N adapters are $55 on amazon.

Thanks. He has the white 360. So I need to go get the adaptor. How do I pay for live and is it a monthly deal?

You can either buy cards online for certain amounts (1,3,12 months) or set it up to bill yearly automatically.

IF you buy the cards you can find them for as cheap as $39.99 a year, but if you set it up to pay yearly you are charged $60/year.

Obviously with the cards you would need to manually enter them.

ETA:

Try to find the older wirless adapter that AJF posted. Not sure if MS still makes them, but they will be cheaper than the Wirless N adapter that I posted.

Sometimes they just give you a demo period of a 48 hours or something like that.

Unless you still on the fence about getting live, I wouldn't even bother with those.

He can probably do all this from his dashboard (entering CC#'s and such for purchasing points), right? It's been so long since I set mine up I don't even remember.

XBL is very user friendly.

I think you are right. I have changed my CC info a couple times and it is all done in the dashboard, so im sure you could set it up that way as well.

Can I piggy back on your question.

I have an xbox in the living room and am about to put one in the bed room but can I use the same xbox live account for both. I wouldn't be logged on to xbox live from both xboxs at the same time.

Just get the adaptor at GameStop and get it used if they have one on hand. You can search for used availability at the GameStop website.

Come back here for questions. We'll do our best for you.

Microsoft doesn't use regular dollars to purchase things on XBL. Instead, you buy points (Microsoft points) through the dashboard (that's the interface you see when you turn on your 360) and then use the points to purchase content in the XBL Marketplace. It's all very simple when you get into it.

ETA: Maybe a flow chart is better than all that.

Use credit card ---> Microsoft Points ---> XBL content.

You are free to use it on either console, but the only probelm is that you have to "recover" it on each console when you want to use it if you previously used it on the other console. It is only able to be active on one console at a time.

You can recover it through the dashboard and it is pretty easy, but you have to type in your email and password you used to sign up, and it also takes 1-10 minutes to actually download all your personlized data . ITs not a very quick process.

Are you doing this to play multiplayer games on both consoles?
