my xbox360 won't save player profile

xbox has worked fine the 8 months we've had it. Monday evening I turn it on and its like all the memory had been erased. player1 and player2 profiles were gone and now it won't allow me to make a new profile? has anyone experienced this? anyone know what I should do? TIA
