Laptop To TV question

Not sure if this is the correct board for this but I figured gaming guys would know.
My wife wants to be able to see EVERYTHING that is on her laptop on our TV. Pictures, home videos, websites, etc. Basically anything that shows up on the monitor she wants on the screen. We already have a Chromecast but Chromecast only works with particular apps (Netflix, youtube, etc)and won't broadcast everything.
I don't have a VGA port on the back of my TV so I can't go that route. I looked into screenbeam but her laptop isn't widi capable.
So basically all I have is HDMI ports on the TV and a VGA port on the laptop. Any options?

they make VGA to HDMI cables out there I am sure. I'm not sure if that translates well to some TV's, but I don't think those cables are too expensive.

VGA to HDMI connector.
Be careful. This is not the same as an HDMI to VGA cord. Going from VGA to HDMI requires external power while HDMI to VGA does cords do not.
You will need to already have or buy a 3.5mm audio cord (basically headphone jack on each side) and a VGA cable. Both very cheap.

thanks that is what I wasn't sure of. I saw the cords and converters. wasn't sure if I could get away with just the cord or had to have a converter.
but even with the converter she'd still need the audio cable. correct?

Edited with VGA and Audio cord links from same site.
Hope $0.88 doesn't break the bank

first check to see if your laptop had an HDMI connection ,my does and you can simply use an HDMI cord and set up your computer like it has two screens. I do this all the time to watch tv online and play games at the same time

I guess that would be a good first suggestion.
I would hope and assume he already looked though.

Nah $0.88 won't kill me. Hell I was willing to buy the Screenbeam to shut her up. I already bought the Chromecast so she could do the Netflix, etc. I just didn't look into it enough to see that she couldn't broadcast everything.
But no the laptop doesn't have HDMI. I need to upgrade. Funds are too low for all that right now though.

yea I looked. HDMI was the first thing I looked for. I checked the tv to see what ports I had available. I have 2 open HDMI ports, an Optical port, and I think the 3.5mm audio port (can't remember off the top of my head.
Then looked at the laptop. all I have is a VGA and data port. and of course the audio ports

Welp, assuming you don't mind wires, this will save you some money.
The screen beam (or a similar product) isn't a bad option if you wanted wireless tho.

Just a reminder that you don't need a 3.55mm port on your TV if that was what you were thinking. One end of the 3.5mm cord will plug into the adapter and the other into your laptop.

Do you have a PS3 or Xbox 360 by chance?

The screenbeam would be awesome for me but the laptop isn't widi capable (and from everything I read on their page it has to be)

That one you linked is for Non-WiDi I believe. that is what the USB dongle is for.

Well once I read your OP again I realized it might not be an option, but if you download a program called PS3 Media Server you can stream video and pictures to your TV through your PS3 or 360 over your network.
There isn't any way to mirror your screen though, so no browser. That might be a deal breaker.

hmm. well I think I'll dig back into the screenbeam and check that out. That'd be the way to go. Honestly I just want to get this crap hooked up and go on about my business.
