They almost didnt greenlight Battlefield 1 because they thought people didnt know WW1 even happened. Or WW2 for that matter.

Normally I love these but this one didn't do it for me. A lot of people have been skeptical of WW1 games, this isn't really a big deal to me. They still let it happen and no one else has.

Jury's still out in that one. Is it possible to make a historically accurate WW1 FPS that appeals to wide audiences?

Verdun is reportedly a great game but it isn't exactly lighting the world on fire

Oh I would definitely agree that there is risk involved with Battlefield 1. But I agree with Jim that company executives have been really, really stupid lately when it comes to judging what consumers actually want.

I highly doubt it will be anything close to historical, and honestly I hope it isnt. I still hold out hope for alternate history bits and pieces in this game.

They are scared of risks but that is what you get with big money companies. EA has actually been better as of late. 5 years ago they would never make another Mirror's Edge.

I would agree with this. I would argue that Ubisoft is a lot worse right now.

And rightfully so. They spend ridiculous amounts of money on games and development, put tight deadlines on those guys to get the game out as quick as possible. All hinging on the possibility of it not sucking and being a complete shite show. And this is all because gamers are so bipolar when it comes to games.

I mean, how familiar will the average gamer be with WW1? Other than history courses through high school and college, I wouldn't know that much about it if I hadn't done independent research on a the subject. WW1 isn't regularly brought up as a comparison like WW2 still is. An EA executive being scared of the prospect of folks not knowing a whole lot about WW1 seems ridiculous, but it's not without merit.

This.

I'm typically all about the consumer dictating the market. But God damn if gamers today aren't some of the most needy, whiny, bitchy, nit picky consumers on the face of the planet.

He's not wrong, but he's preaching to the choir at this point.

Im developing one, it takes a piece from other franchises.

You start off as a poor, artist on the side Adolf Hitler.

Has career mode. Etc. Will eventually be able to transition your save progress into WW2. (and after that, downloadable content for when you retire to South America)

I would argue that since the Battlefield 1 reveal trailer is the most liked video in the history of youtube, and the general hype around it being higher than the average battlefield release, that supposed risk about it has been disproven. At least it terms of wether or not the game will sell well. Wether or not the game is any good is another story. But after the disaster of battlefront, is there anywhere else to go but up?

I think the like/dislike thing with COD/BF was more excellent timing on EAs part to capitalize on poor COD reception. Though I'd be quite amused if WW1 turns out to be a fan favorite time period
