This moring there was a Itunes update. After updating I plugges the phone back in and get this error message?

This Iphone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started.

Any ideas? I'm sure it is something simple

it's a background service that runs to help iTunes.

not sure exactly what it does without doing some research

I'd suggest rebooting your computer first. If not then, maybe you've shut the service off somehow. I can show how to turn it back on.

Sounds like the bonjour program hasn't started or has been shut down. Like KK said, there are ways to start it back up no problem.
