How much affect does the modem have on the internet connection? I have the standard one from cox and was wondering if upgrading the modem made the connection better?

DOCSIS 3.0 is the way to go.

Without being certain, I would say that there will be no point. Your bandwidth and internet statistics are determined by Cox, not your modem.
