What exactly has the wii u allowed then to do?

Has it been as successful as the 3DS or DS or Wii, no. But it let's them think outside of the box.

Off-screen play, not revolutionary, but I've used it a ton. Wonderful 101.... doesn't exist without the screen. I loved the use in Pickmin, asynchronous play. Same for Mario 3D world, Nintendoland, Wii Fit, Splatoon, etc.

In the same vein, I like that Smash doesn't use the screen in any meaningful way. That's ok too.

Whether or not it's successful as it's exactly intentioned doesn't really matter. It keeps Nintendo in control, keeps them loose in design, and let's them think out of the box. Putting them as a third party puts them into someone else's box. That just not where they do their best work.

What people want is a Nintendo that still experiments. I've enjoyed a ton of games on the Xbox over the past year, but in the end, I feel like most companies are making slight variations on the same game. For instance, Shadows of Mordor and Sunset Overdrive Completely different worlds. Completely different controls, completely different tones. But somehow they felt.....similar. They were both fantastic games, really, but they felt the same in the end. I liked the heck out of both. On the flip side, 3D World felt only like one Mario before it. Splatoon was completely new and Xenoblade is currently blowing my mind. And I can't think of any similar game for any of those on another console. That's the difference.

And if it ends up being the bridge from the Wii/DS to some new system that combines portable and console games, then I'm sold on it's validity, because that's the end that I want to see.

People shouldn't want a Nintendo that is in control of someone else, beholden to their hardware, their audience, their needs. They should want one who's willing to do the crazy things like Splatoon, and make it work.

I have a wii u also but that game pad has been nothing but a pain in the arse that made me less likely to play it.

You say these other games all feel the same but that's how I feel about Mario at this point. Sounds like they did a great job with splatoon but a lot of their ips have been more of the same lately. It's been a while since they made a Zelda I cared about which is sad considering how much I used to love them.

I've never gotten the hate for it. And 90% of games can be played without it. In fact, I think Nintendoland, Wonderful 101, Rayman, Zombii U and Pikmin are the few really good games that absolutely require it. I play Xenoblade with it but it just makes it easier. I could play without it. Smash, Bayonetta, 3D World, etc., can be played with the Controller.

I also like Splatoon with the pad. My only issue with the pad is the battery life, mine's at like 2 hours of play now. But I've used it a ton.

To each his own, and that's ok. You aren't going to like a Nintendo game on an Xbox more than you like a Nintendo game on a Nintendo console. Maybe Mario games just aren't for you?

Ha.

I've liked Nintendo for a loooongg time, never owned a Pokemon game.

There's nothing wrong with Handhelds when some of the best traditional Japanese RPGs of the last 10 - 15 years have been on them.

I grew up on Mario games. I used to play them exclusively but 3d world was just another except in 3d which I think is inferior to their 2d games. That game could have also been on any system.

It may not bother you but it clearly bothers a lot of people. And optional is not entirely true when they don't give you another controller.

To each their own

But without that game pad I couldn't play the wii u as I travel or play it at work while burning time. Wish my xbone had a similar game pad.

Nintendo has officially announced there will be multiple media expansions regarding their IPs just a day or two ago by their new president.

I'm hyped. I get to see these pretty faces on TV.

Yeah MEDIA expansion is great. It's smart.

Console availability expansion is not.
