Being super optimistic here, is this their way of transitioning away from the Gordon Freeman "narrative" and going a different direction? I mean, I know he's iconic to the franchise, but honestly, how much would the series suffer if you were some other mute protagonist? Alyx took off with the G-Man, combine still fully in power..........I just don't feel this means it's fully dead, unless someone has flat out confirmed that.

I no longer know or recognize most members of the research team, though I believe the spirit of rebellion still persists. I expect you know better than I the appropriate course of action, and I leave you to it. Expect no further correspondence from me regarding these matters; this is my final episode.

That paragraph is much more about how Marc no longer recognizes the team at Valve. That paragraph, to me, was the nail for any further HL games for now.

FWIW this plot is probably HL2 E3.

Oh it's absolutely ep. 3. The antarctic locale had been more or less confirmed for it.

I'm really curious about the motivation on this. Ex-employee, so is he bitter about how it all went down and decided to give the fans "something", or did valve reach out and ask him to put a stamp on the HL2 saga?

Most of us just assumed they wouldn't go the episode route if and when they ever decided to revisit the franchise, so perhaps this could serve as a prologue for 3, if it ever got made.

If you can't tell, I'm not ready to go just yet

The tones and themes of HL2 shaped me as a youth.

But then again, the series ended perfectly IMO.

Hopelessness

Not just some ex-employee, the series was his story. The last paragraph makes it abundantly clear - it's not about Gordon, it's about him and Valve. The NDA is up so he's giving us the closure we wouldn't otherwise get

i still have hope that we get a badass Half Life 3 in VR, but it would be like Martin dying and someone finishing ASOIAF. It's just not the same. G-Man showing up at the end would've sent me into a spiral of sorrow thinking that Alyx would die alone in the Combine world.....and then he takes her instead of Gordon. Would've left my jaw on the floor.
