I actually interpreted that section differently, that the “work” being referenced is the work of de-raiding Lara, and that they were doing it “alongside” the video games.
Though I think both yours and mine would be reasonable interpretations, and I don’t know which is actually correct.

I mean, I could see their point if she was going into a tomb with an existing civilization still intact, taking things from it, then shooting her guide in the face when they asked her to, you know, not?

After doing a bit of digging it seems like Crystal Dynamics has pretty much little to nothing to do with this and Evil Hat is just using the IP to sell the game. It’s been made abundantly clear that it’s non-cannon and stuff like this is pretty common with Evil Hat apparently.
