I guess this is the best place to ask about board games. How difficult would this be for a 9 year old to play? It would be him, his teenage sister and me playing but I've never played so I was curious.

Watching this because I have been wondering exact same. Hate to burn $50 and it's too hard for them but I really want to play.
Mine are ages 8, 11, 13.

I have the full Gloomhaven and have still not gotten in to the table.

I do think Jotl is easier, not sure by how much.

I have yet to play Jaws of the Lion, but have played a handful of the original Gloomhaven missions. The game isn't tough to learn how to play, but there is a lot of strategy and planning your turn efficiently.

I guess the bigger question is has this 9 year old played any other board games before? If they have only played roll and move games like Monopoly and Sorry it may be overwhelming for them. If they have some experience with modern designer board games and some experience with dungeon crawls they will be able to better handle the concepts.

This is good advice. If you can't get your hands on a good copy of HeroQuest, I might look at something like Descent first, that might be easier to control.

I do know that the battle system is typically more than a few dice and math for JoTL

Jaws of the Lion does a good job of holding your hand and slowly adding elements through the first 5-10 scenarios. Worth a shot

I've played a lot of the original game, up to having retired my third character last week.

The game is fun, but there's some management you have to stress. It's more than just your health; you discard cards and then lose one for the duration of the mission each rest. Some cards are lost when used. The smaller your hand, the fewer turns, so if you're not careful with rest timing and when to lose cards, you can end up out of the scenario.

Stamina potions are good to have to recover 2-3 cards without needing to rest.

I don't know how much JotL follows the same formula.

So bumping this.

We played scenario 1 last night and the 9 year old really enjoyed it. It's very hand holdy and took longer to set up and read/explain than to play the first scenario but by the end he got it. As it adds more cards and options it'll be more difficult but I think will do well, even if he needs a bit of help.
