Gaming club?

So at my high school I'm the advisor for a new club, Gaming Guru's, I'd like suggestions and events for the club. So far we've built a plan based on safe game play, design, marketing and production emphasis with speakers lined up once a month. We've also put a minimum GPA of 3.0 and put in plans for Wizard World in January and E3 in June.

See if you can't get a few older gen consoles and run some smash brothers tournaments, etc. Open it up to the school. Run some Pokemon Go events (if possible).

You need an Overwatch Tournament team

Do not invite Anita Sarkeesian.
We had a club like that a hundred years ago when I was in high school. We had side-by-side speedrun competitions as well as head-to-head multiplayer events. We also had a white board with weekly challenges (beat Mike Tyson's Punch-Out without taking damage, complete SMB level in less than 30 seconds, etc.) along with a leaderboard for certain scores/accomplishments.
If you're looking for topical stuff regarding gaming, there's all kinds of good stuff. Heck, you can probably watch a few Youtube videos of TotalBiscuit, AVGN, or even Angry Joe and get some ideas if you're looking for discussion on issues surrounding gaming. As much of an arse AJ is, his Top Controversies of 20XX are really good and could easily be turned into a discussion point (either from a lecturer POV or as an open discussion). Maybe even 'How To' lectures for those who want to learn how to build a legit streaming channel or Youtube channel, how to mod games, etc.
Another one would be discussion about a particular games' narrative. Whether it be about the meaning of a game's theme or the style of writing/script or whatever, there's plenty there to build from. Sort of like a book club, just in video game form.

I would suggest mixing in at least a little table top gaming.

I'm a 17 year teacher/coach, my pics would do you harm lol
My wife is also a teacher, but I'm not going down the creeper hole...
As for the helpful thoughts, I like the older console tournament ideas are great ( I have such an advantage there, and no one has said I can't school the members lol).
The Overwatch idea is also great as I might be able to get a sponsor out if it

I agree. Being a math guy it would give me the opportunity to show some old Princeton style game theory concepts over time.

If they're really creative and you can manage the technical aspect of it, have game design competitions. Let'em use a game engine like Unreal Engine and make something in X amount of time.

Not sure what the club details are but it would be cool for a historical aspect of it. You tubers like gaming historian do a great job with a lot of that.
