With more casual gamers going towards mobile and tablet gaming, I don't think we'll ever get to that point. I think the industry has plateau'd for the US.
That said, there are a lot of small markets that have major potential like India and Brazil that could become big cash cows in the future. That's the only reason why the PS2 is still being shipped out. They sell a few 100k every year in developing markets.

They did stop production on the PS2 back in January though.

I had just graduated HS and had a summer job making bank with no bills, went into WalMart and told the lady I wanted a PS3, all the kids and few adults in electronics just looked at me.
She goes to the back, grabs one and rings me up, $690 and some change, I whip out 7 bills and pay for it.
Walk out with some serious swag as everyone stares at my PS3 box then me, sup?

Both consoles have games in development for 2-3 years down the road, so why should that impact my purchase at all? If I am spending money on a console there needs to be a game library available to justify the purchase. I already made that mistake with the vita.

It depends on your mindset and how much value you get out of your purchase when it is made. Let's say there's a dry spell for PS4/Xbone and there's no new games I want for 6 months after that launch window. I was able to find 3-4 games that I really wanted to play, and I know that there's games coming that I'm very interested in. I wouldn't call that purchase a waste or misused.
I know not everyone has that mindset though.

The only exclusive on XBox that is remotely interesting is that Ryse game and even then its just a GoW ripoff with a Roman history paintjob.

You're an idiot, Uncharted 2 and The Last of Us both have higher user scores than either Bioshock.
You specifically said Infinite too, TLoU and Uncharted 2 both have higher critic scores and user scores than Infinite.
TLoU outsold Infinite, AN EXCLUSIVE vs a Multiplat, and it sold more.
Just stop.
