Is there a way to create a game? And are you just doing a quick match (or whatever they call it).
I think usually if you go through the process of creating the game it automatically just gives you an opponent that did a quick match and they are the away team.
I'm kinda making that up though...

Its pretty wierd,but you can be the home team. Go to head to head, press square, put in whatever game type you want, etc.I usally put conventional, and my skilll level only. Then when it says unable to find match, click on create game session, and you will be the home team.
