Emulator, ROM's, and a Game Controller That Works on a Fire Stick?

I'm having a hell of a time getting my Amazon game controller to work my NES ROM's. I'm using RetroArch as my emulator. The emulator and ROM's look great, but my Amazon controller won't control the NES ROM's.
My Fire Stick isn't rooted, by the way. I have read that the regular Amazon Fire box, and a USB wireless receiver will allow an XBox 360 controller to work the ROM's perfectly fine (on a regular Fire Box). Has anyone tried that route? I would really like for my boy to enjoy some of the old NES games that I did as a teenager, but right now, that isn't going to work since my controller is a no-go with the Fire Stick.
