DVD on the Wii?

I was given a Wii to use for the kids room. I'm kinda suprised to see that it wont play DVDs. From reading online there are downloads you can install that will "unlock" this feature. Has anyone attempted this? is it safe or am I going to screw up the system?
Am I better off just buying a cheap DVD player?

It does not play DVD's nor is there a way to unlock it to be able too.

Wrong...there is a way to unlock it...it have to hack it though

Homebrew will show up as a channel on the stock Wii dashboard?
