Charmander but getting your Color and trading with yourself with your advance so that you start out with all 3 was the way to go for sure.

Squirtle was the best starting Pokemon. Super effective against Brock's and able to mitigate damage from Misty's.

Charmander was so hard mode though, even though I didn't know it at the time.
Squirtle was normal mode and Bulbusaur was bitch mode.

My cousin(who actually plays for LSU but I won't name names) actually played the real pokemon card game to death and even went to some tournament but got beat by a 7 year old in the regional championship or some shite. I was lolling.
