Finally pulled the trigger the other day and I've been playing pretty much non-stop when I haven't been at work.
Well, I'm lvl 20 now and I'm kind of stuck. I have no clue how to unlock better armor or weapons. I've been doing crucible and strikes and only seem to pick up either uncommon drops or rare 'special' weapon engrams'. What do I have to do to start getting some of the better armor? I've been doing bounties but idk what else to do.

Do the weekly strikes. Save up marks from crucible and use them at your class trainer

Yes I know, but only a number of weapons and armor aren't going to be able to carry over from year 1

Big thing for you right now so you can get to 25 before TTK releases is do bounties to get your vanguard/crucible rep to rank 2 in order to get pieces of gear with 42 light, they'll cost some marks so either farm crucible or strikes. Crucible and strikes can also drop engrams & gear that will increase your light level as well.

Actually only a small number of weapons & armor will carry over and be useful in year 2. Even basic greens and blues in year 2 will be better than maxed exotics right now. So really, just hold on for a few more weeks, and when Taken King drops you will get a one time consumable that will get your toon up to level 25, which is the min level required to do year 2 stuff.
ETA: Ive got a 34 and 2 level 32 toons, and I am just skating by right now, cause I know we are all going to be starting over from a gear perspective in about 2 weeks. No reason to burn out now. Also, if want higher level players willing to help you fight through some strikes down near your level, check out federation of fathers. Tons of really active guys on there, and most are more than willing to sherpa for guys just starting out.
ETA: Ive got a 34 and 2 level 32 toons, and I am just skating by right now, cause I know we are all going to be starting over from a gear perspective in about 2 weeks. No reason to burn out now. Don't worry about weekly's/nightfalls yet.
Now that you're lvl 20... welcome to the grind
Start grinding Tiger/Roc/Dragon playlists. I believe the armor from Tiger playlists can get you up to 24, Roc 26 and Dragon 28. You will also obtain vanguard marks which you can use to buy legendary armor to get to 30.
Once you're 30, you can start doing Prison of Elders lvl 32 and get armor cores to level up to 34 eventually.

What platform are you playing on? If you're on PS4, my clan mates and I are more than willing to help get you up to speed in terms of gear and weapons.

I am just going to throw this in here. I can't seem to find any where you can pre order TTK for Xbox 360. My friend said GameStop so I went there and they said if you already have both DLCs you should get the digital DLC which is only offered through Xbox.
So I bought an Xbox redeemable card but then when I went to purchase through Xbox marketplace it says it's not available for 360. The best I could come up with is it will be available on the 15th. Yet every other platform it is already available. I don't understand what the hold up is and why it's only on 360.

One other thing is: system requirements for space. I believe for PS3 it is supposed to be 20gb and for Xbox One and PS4 it's supposed to be 40gb. I think I saw one mention of 10gb for 360 but also that there is another update coming out on the 8th that is quite sizable. Any info would be great thanks in advance.

That would be because there isn't one, believe the 360 crowd will have to buy it on Day 1.
