What the younger generation doesn`t know is some of us older guys like myself, played games that didn`t have the option to save. Sometimes I left the game on all night with the TV off, just so I didn`t have to start over.

I think Zelda was the first game I had that saved my progress.

But that's the thing. you can't remember stuff if you have no idea where it is to begin with. Like some of these crucial levels are only accessible by burning random arse bushes. I just can't see it being done by children.

I would spend hours going around burning bushes and bombing rocks. My friends would tell me what they found and soon I knew where most of the secrets were. We didn't have many games so I would just replay 4 or 5 until I mastered them.

You beat the game by learning tips at sleepovers at your friends house. He shows you some tree you can set on fire, while you show him the combo to get to the westernmost parts of the game. Another friend will chime in and direct you to some of the more obfuscated heart containers. Next thing you know, you're raping baddies on labyrinth 6 (what a fricking nightmare of a labyrinth) with the motherfricking master sword. Evening the score. As a child of the late 80's/early 90's you beat Zelda by word of mouth. None of this spoilt pussy-arse go online and see what "the community" has come up with. You didn't play this game for a couple of weeks, quitting after tallying 60 hours of gameplay, and 25/30 steam achievements. No, you played that game for fricking years. And then your bitch of a friend erases your character, because he's an arse. And then you do it all over again.

And then after its all said and done, you do the fricking master quest. Because you only have about 6 or 7 $50 NES cartridges in your cartridge carrying case. And Zelda 2 is shite. So you go back to Zelda. Only to find out that your lithium battery can no longer hold saves. And so then you start speed running. Or leave the NES on overnight. That type of shite.

Saw someone on youtube beat it in something like 28 minutes. I had no idea you could do most every dungeon out of order. Ganon's dungeon has to be done last obviously.

I used to have to do this with Crystalis, still my favorite game of all time, because the save file would get erased like 90% of the time when you turned it off. I'm pretty sure I kept my NES on for 2 weeks straight once.

So much truth in this post. the wiki says these two things about zelda:

it was the first cartidge game with a battery for saves

and miyamoto said in the design stages at first you started out with the sword, but that players testing in japan would get very confused bc the game was so hard.

so miyamoto took the sword away and hid it in that cave (its dangerous to go alone) so that friends would talk to each other figuring things out together. Zelda is credited because of this for starting an entire new form of communication about video games, this marked collaboration between friends figuring stuff out together and sharing secrets.

Could you imagine a developer releasing a game that hard now, then trying to sell you a magazine subscription with the secrets? Things have changed a lot

you can play NES zelda 1 on any PC here. They have some cool mods too but the basic NES port is the standard. It's a cool game to play at work with keyboard if you are in a office.

I think I developwd anger issues because of how hard these games were. I'm not sure if they could make games like that anymore. You could punch a CRT TV without breaking ot. Can't do that with an LED.

Most games back then were very hard due to no unlimited lives and very unforgiving health/time. Kids may play some tougher games today, but they definitely benefit from how often they can save and die. Zelda was just par for the course what we were use to back then. I definitely had a better accomplished feeling back then than I do for beating a new game today. Beating games back then without game genie or konami code was fricking hard.

The teens react youtube video to Mega Man is hilarious.

Just the normal react teens, they have standard kids they use all the time. I am sure they play games, probably not hardcore gamers though.

Its pretty cool to see kids that play modern games play them. It's easy to forget that we grew up with those games but some of these kids probably never played a platformer or if they did it was just modern Mario.

I remember reading a few years back the games were also made harder to make more people buy them. Instead of just renting and playing a couple times and beating it you'd have to buy it because it took so long to beat.

Possibly, but I'm pretty sure they were hard before the rental market was relevant. I could be wrong though. Game design is certainly different now.

Like, no matter how frustrated you were, how would you know to burn that bush to get to the last dungeon. There wasn't even any clues to point you in the right direction for a lot of this game.

The bush over the entrance to Level 8 was out of place. If you see a bush in an odd location you know to burn it.

Other than that, it's kind of a team effort. Someone figures out a secret and tells their friends.

007 373 5963 got around by word of mouth too.
