Ok, things I learned:
Don't put them all out in front of the boss. Throw one out and then scatter a few around him
We don't need to be fighting a boss any time soon. We need to level up and try our luck later.

Reading, the boss is supposed to take all the damage from us as a group. 1 individual won't be able to defeat him and as we attack he should get weaker

He was a special legendary for Halloween, I've had to go against him in duels is all I know

I think I am going to consume the Engineer. He's not really doing anything and is just a basic hero.

I somehow had 500 gems. Spent 450. Got a pally. Gives me. Paladin, TG, Champion, and Succubus 
Also a good way to level a hero for me has been to put them in the dungeon that gives like 1800 gold and mana and drop all my gryphons with the hero. Normally lose about 6 gryphons but all the xp goes to the hero.
