Druid is absolutely essential because he is by far the most powerful healer, and he's a pretty stout fighter to boot.
Thunder God is extremely handy because his special hits multiple enemies anywhere on the field.
Champion is nice in the arena and against the boss, and he also does pretty well in HBM I find. He is iffy for raiding.
Succubus is a beast in arena. You should play arena as often as possible btw.
There are several special heroes that can't be bought with shards, so you have to get lucky when you roll a hero with gems to get them. They are generally better than the heroes you can get with shards.
A hero dream team would probably be Druid, Thunder God, Pumpkin Duke, Cupid, and take your pick on a 5th hero.

So I better just leave these guys at 20 and wait until I have legendaries before I upgrade any beyond that...
I won't be able to advance past where I am in the arena though. They're all starting to have 20+ heroes.

Nah, you can go up to 60 or 80 with the blues. You will need them to be kind of strong when you start playing HBM, and it might take a long time before you have 5 legendary heroes. They are also useful later on after your towers get over level 10 (I think), then you can garrison heroes inside and the blues have effects that the purples don't. I have 17 heroes and only 9 are purple. The rest are a mix of blue and green.
It's hard for me to remember the early game, but basically you need to keep grinding for resources and level your town hall until you can build 5 hero bases. That is the absolute bare essential point you need to get to before you can start doing the fun stuff like HBM, boss fights, and arena.

You don't really need to advance in the arena. The hourly HB payout doesn't increase much unless you reach very high ranks. The better strategy is to set up your arena defense with only 1 weak hero so that other players can beat you easily and drop your rank. That way when you play you will be able to easily win every match (and earn 40HB per win vs 6HB per loss).

I will have to look at the 40:1 design because I still can't beat E. My HBM heroes are 108 TG, 103 Dru, 100+ Succ, 106 Pal, and 80 GR. I keep a 100 ninja on my bench and have not leveled anyone else to be of value. My garrisons are all lvl 1 pink, blue, red with one lvl 2 pink one.

I'm beating E even though none of my guys are over 100 yet, and I only garrison 4 legendary guys for lvl 1 on each tower, and zero bombs.
I think 40:1 is worth a shot for you. I was losing D ridiculously badly with the 'death box' and others, but with 40:1 D is a breeze and E is pretty easy too. I have beaten E 6 times in a row now, and I usually lose about 2 towers but all 5 heroes survive (except I lost 1 hero once and 2 heroes once).
Also, it has room inside the walls to place 4 vaults when you aren't doing HBM, so converting a somewhat effective raid defense is quick.

You have my guys almost exactly, except stronger. Yeah, give 40:1 a shot and be sure to place everything exactly.
