Can someone who is a Final Fantasy connoisseur give me their opinion on 1-9?

I bought Secret of Mana on iOS, and I loved it, reminded me of my childhood. However, I wanna check out some old school final fantasy titles that I never played. I think the iOS store goes all the way up to 8 if I remember correctly.

Don't have to give a dissertation on the matter just a general opinion.

Thanks

I've been a huge FF fan since I was a kid. 2 and 3 for the SNES are amazing games. Some say 3 is the best Final Fantasy ever. *Note* it was only Final Fantasy 2 and 3 on the SNES. They are actually the 4th and 6th game. If you download them on the PSN store or iOS, it will actually be Final Fantasy IV and VI (not 2 and 3).

I absolutely love 7,8, and 9 as well. Obviously, 7 is a classic. It is what got a ton of Americans into RPGs back in the 90s.

8 is love or hate. I love it, but I know people who don't care for it. I definitely think its worth a play through.

9 is a great game. Some people say this is the best FF in the 32 bit era. Definitely play this one.

Final Fantasy Tactics is worth playing as well. It often overlooked, but it has an amazing story and tough difficulty. You should absolutely play it.

10 is the last one a really enjoyed. I kind of liked 12, but I'm more into the traditional turn based battle system. 12 is turn based, but its more active...isn't a bad game by any means.

ETA: FF 5 is fun as well. I prefer playing Super Famicom version, but I believe you can download the English translated version on iOS. It was not released on the Super Nintendo, unfortunately. It has a customizable job system, which was unheard of during the 16 bit era.

You'll probably hear a lot about 6 being the best of the bunch...

I was actually anticipating a knob slob of FF6 cause my brother played that game to the ends of the Earth

And thanks to TDR . That is actually just what I needed at least from one person.

This guy 100% gets it.

Huge fan here too and pretty much agreed on everything he said.

6 and 9 are the gold standards. (9 is my personal favorite.)

All games are great, some more than others, but as a teen in the 90s, 6 pretty much changed my life. That thing has stuck with me ever since.

So I rate them:
Tier 1
FF 3/6
FF 2/4

Tier 2
FF 5 (can be found in emulators in English, was released on the DS in English as well)
FF 8
FF 7
FF 10
FF 3 (the real 3)

Tier 3
FF 1
FF 9

And even Tier 3 isn't THAT bad.

This is a quality post and I agree 100%, this coming from a guy who is 32 and grew up with all of them and FF is my all time favorite series. FF7 is my favorite, and 6 and 9 are my other faves.

I don't think I have ever saw somebody put 9 at the bottom. Over 1 2 3 and 5 that is crazy to me. But to each his own.

My first FF was 7. From my experience, those who started with 7 didn't like 8. Other friends that started with 8 prefer it over 7.

I tried to play 8 but, unfortunately, couldn't get into it. I think it had more to do with me being so in love with 7 and getting burned out on it.

9 was amazing. It's on par with 7 for me. If I had played it first, I'd probably rank it over 7 but 7 just has that sentimental value since it was my first.

10 was the last one I really enjoyed if you don't count 11 and 14 (thousands of hours and several dropped classes in college because of 11 ).

I haven't completed any of the 1-6 but I think the consensus is 6 is the best.

I'd start with 6 if I were you and then go to 7/9. You could always skip 7 for now and have an unbiased take on the Remake.

Here is my take on each.

I group FF1 and FF2 together as they're both the very old school and have limited plot. They're still very well done and definitely worth a play-through if you're ok with a retro RPG. I recommend the PSP/Vita remakes.

FF3 and 5, I group together because of their similarities in battle system/jobs. They're alright games, but both are my least favorites in the entire series. Don't like the characters at all, and 5 is a big step back from 4. FF3 was remade for DS (and the PC version is a port of the iOS version, which was a port of the DS version). FF5 has been "remade" on iOS/PC, but it looks like sin. Go old school GBA/PS1 for it.

For FF4, it was first story driven FF. It's very fun to play and is one of the most endearing and charming games I've ever played. It's my 3rd favorite Final Fantasy title and I think it's the best starting point for anyone wanting to play the older FFs. I recommend the Complete Collection on PSP/Vita (DS remake is also very good).

FF6 is the hipster FF of choice in the past few years. It has some pretty cool things in it, but I think it's pretty overrated. Definitely worth the play-through for the history/cast. Definitely for fans of older JRPGs, I just think FF4 did it better.

Honestly, I don't really feel the need to go into detail about FF7. I think the story is pretty messy, but materia is a lot of fun and the world has a lot of really cool places/things to do. 2nd favorite setting in all FF games though.

FF8 is a weird one with the broken junction/draw system. For all FF7 did as the first major 3D RPG, FF8 definitely did a lot things differently. The introduction of Triple Triad is something that you still see in future Square things today. Some of the characters are kinda odd and Squall is love/hate, but it's still a very memorable game.

For FF9, it's my favorite game of all time. I could spend a lot of time explaining what I love about it, but I don't think it'd be interesting. Amazing characters, great additions to ATB that make it fun (AP/skill learning, Trance, 4 characters, etc), and a lovely story.

Okay, random post here, but I've never played a Final Fantasy game before other than 14, which I know is not like the others at all, considering it's an MMO.

Before I played that, the only real Final Fantasy experience I had other than sometimes watching some friends, was through the Kingdom Hearts series so I know some of the big characters, like Cloud, Leon and so on.

Regardless, the remake of 7 is something I'm interested in. I'm just curious if I decide to pick it up am I going to be totally lost or will I be able to jump straight into it?

I love FF4 as well and it's up there in the all time best JRPG's but FF6 isn't overrated. The characters in 6 alone make it one of the best and Kefka's arc elevates it IMO. Plus the part where you all split up and have to follow each character solo for a while, the opera scene, shadow...I could go on. It's rated very high for a reason. I think rightfully so.

Yep. I found myself agreeing with everything he said except for 6 being overrated.

Kafka is one of my favorite of all time. His theme brings back memories.

4 was my first Final Fantasy, if you don't count Mystic Quest. So it holds the most nostalgia for me. I love it.

It's not crazy because while it is a good game, after a recent playthrough earlier this year I felt like the main reason people say they like it so much is because it borrows good things from every other game in the series leading up to it.

No way man. I've been hearing people say 6 is the best for the past 20 years.

I'ts crazy because it is the most critically acclaimed Final Fantasy of all time, and 2nd highest in user rankings behind 7.

The fact that he has it behind 3 and 5 (the real 3) is very very out there. Something about the game, he must have really hated.
