I'm still trucking through Cyberpunk and am in awe of Night City. This thing is so massive and so detailed, and that fact that you don't ever have to load assuming you don't fast travel is astonishing. It might be the best I've ever seen. I think top for me are:

Cybperpunk
GTA V
Witcher 3
Skyrim

Honorable mention for Oblivion because while it wasn't that deep, the distinct feel of all the different cities and the detailed schedules their NPCs followed were incredible.

Most disappointing I decided to include just because of Starfield. I love the game, but their universe is just a letdown. Even their main city New Atlantis is a sprawlingly large for no reason absolutely retarded layout.

best:
World of warcraft in its prime
Witcher 3
Cyberpunk
AC black flag
red dead (both really)
Spiderman ps4
elden ring

disappointing
starfield: cities themselves poorly designed and just not exciting. planets random generated nothingness.

no man sky at release (i haven't played recently)

Far cry (the most recent one):very bland compared to some other entries in the series

Witcher 3. I loved everything from the despair and dread of riding through Velen with battlefield wreckage sprinkled throughout, and the contrast of the major cities there along with how well Toussaint was done. Actually, that may be my favorite region period. Skellige was ok but the amount of small islands and loot in the middle of the sea was tedious.

I also loved BOTW, the fact I could see a mountain on the very far end of the world and travel to it, and then climb it with zero load time or issues was astonishing based on the size of Hyrule.

I remember getting Mafia 3 day one because of it being set in 1968 New Orleans and being extremely disappointed.

Cyberpunk is an empty, devoid, lifeless world. Unless they've completely retooled the game in the last 2 years, it's not even top 50.

Damn I had forgotten about this. I played OG WoW and Burning Crusade and remember marveling at everything. I actually had a blast in the game until I got to level 60 and started raiding and then everyone was a miserable fricker.

It has been almost completely retooled, but with that aside, the lady doth protest too much, methinks. While the game world didn’t live up to the hype, the hype was “by far the greatest, most immersive game world in history”. Doesn’t make it a bad game world. Even at release, I think one would start to comically strain credulity getting past 20 or so games with better game worlds, much less 50.

Witcher 3's world really hit me when just like you, I spent a long time riding around Velen and just feeling the death and misery and then you cross the Pontar / guarded border toward Novigrad & Redania and everything is so pristine and untouched by the war. Really amazing design.

a lot of mine have already been listed, so I'll add some others.

Mario 64...really loved the concept of accessing different worlds from the paintings in the castle.

Arkham City and Arkham Knight

Demon's Souls - Boletaria
Dark Souls - Lordran

And I'll add that maybe it didn't have much depth, I'm talking about the detail of the city and technical marvel. I drove out to the far ends of the Badlands and the city was glowing at night on the horizon. If I had a jetpack I could have jumped off the buildings and floated around. It's really well done.

When you first get to the snowy mountains of Skellige in witcher 3 and they drop this banger LINK

I think I walked around on my horse for an hour just looking around and listening to the music in awe. Such a great game

Yeah but there's dildos laying around everywhere. Isn't that neat?

I will throw out Ghost of Tsushima as an impressive world. The way the grasses and trees respond to the wind - the rich colors. Exploring the island from the fields to the snowcapped mountains was the greatest part of the game.

I think it’s the hype hangover. The hype train said you could enter every building and every citizen was unique with their own schedule and personality and and and…

And it isn’t that. But almost no games have that, and especially not in the scope of size Night City presents.
