ARMS: Reviews and Discussion

Getting some pretty solid reviews: 78

It’s difficult to describe just how good ARMS is. The best analogy I can come up with is that it is to fighting games what Splatoon is to third-person shooters. ARMS is a bright, colorful, and welcoming game. Newcomers can easily hop in and enjoy most of the matches and modes available. Meanwhile, the more dedicated will find themselves developing complex strategies based on characters and ARMS loadouts and captivated by the opportunities to challenge others online.
quote:
Fighting titles have long been the most competitive and often hardest for new players to get into, but ARMS enters itself extremely well to the genre by feeling like nothing that has ever been played before.
quote:
Arms exudes a level of creativity and mechanical sophistication that feels uniquely Nintendo. It evokes memories of classic Nintendo games like Punch-Out!!, while also feeling equally fashionable and modern — and set next to Splatoon, suggests the publisher is already charting a path toward the future. With a stylish, memorable cast of characters, inventive gameplay mechanics and smart use of the Switch hardware, Arms already feels like Nintendo's next great new franchise.
quote:
ARMS is a great package, subverting and exceeding most of my expectations while offering modes of play that cater to a variety of players. The offline Grand Prix mode leaves much to be desired, and the 2 v 2 tethered fights are lame, but all that is made up for by an assortment of other entertaining modes, slick online lobbies and surprisingly deep and addictive gameplay. At the end of the day, it’s all about having fun, and ARMS provides that in spades.
quote:
Arms’ clever take on boxing provides a simple premise with a startling amount of depth for those who would seek to master the stretching appendages. Its rapidly evolving lobby system had me sticking around for “just one more match.” There may not be a lot worth unlocking right now, but planned free updates may just give Arms some additional legs.
quote:
It works as a fighter, I just wish there was more to do in this debut entry -- both pragmatically in terms of modes and on an emotional level, as I haven't really connected with its universe yet despite its raw style.
Negatives include lack of single player content, controls that are sometimes awkward, mediocre mini games and lack of advanced training.
I didn't play this past weekend's testpunch, but the first one was great. Super unique fighting game.

I realllly enjoyed it. I played 4 of the hours on test punches and was top of the group I was in all 4 times. I really haven't played many fighting games in the current gens but grew up with MK and SF, Tekken, SC, etc.
This is a fun game. I cant wait to see all the other fighters and what the other 30+ arms are.
Day 1 purchase to me. Nintendo is doing to knock this gen out the park.

I really hope so. I do feel that Arms is the newest proof that we see Nintendo still one of the few companies who takes big risks in trying to find new franchises, new ways to play, and just scrapping old paradigms when they can.
This game does not look like it should work. At all. Yet it does.
It's a super unique game that I enjoyed in the Testpunch.

Wonder how many of these ARMS characters are gonna be in Smash V.

I'm guessing just Spring Man. The roster is getting tight. But Smash 5 is probably just going to be Super Smash Bros Deluxe. There has been some supposedly leaked that show some of the 3DS' modes and stages in HD textures. I feel like they'll announce it next week at E3, probably add 6-8 characters, and remove Lucina, Dark Pit, Dr Mario, and possibly Cloud.
I would be curious how Spring Man with all of his range would work though. I would be hoping he'd be almost useless in close encounters and kind of like Marth, the further away you are from him the more damage is done.

Naaaaa. Cloud maybe, only because of licensing. No way they take away characters they don't have to.

Mega Man works fine. Long range focused characters are ok.

And it's out on the eshop.
I'm out this weekend but this game is great, will be playing heavily over the coming weeks.

I love it.
The skill ceiling is pretty high too, although I do hope they balance a few things. Ribbon Girl and Kid Cobra in Particular.
Also, they need to change up or speed up coin collection. 100 coins takes like 2-3 hours to get.

I got it, but haven't played it yet. I wish I could find a second pair of joy cons.

Is there a demo I can try out? At first glance it didn't interest me at all, but seeing all you fools hyping it has me curious.

I'ma tell you what I was cruising through the single player grand prix til about the 4th difficulty level and now I really have to learn the other guys moves bc I got my arse handed to me by twintales. I eventually got her but it involved a lot of warp dodging with ninjara.
The higher difficulty levels are going to be crazy tough.
Very fun

They did demos over 2 of the last 3 weekends. No demo in the eShop right now.
I do wish Nintendo would get its demo game going, they lack there as well.

Each character has two specific powers they can do.
I do with they would move the block button to anything else

Anybody started playing ranked matches yet? Definitely a challenge. Finally started winning a few.
