Come on dude, it's subjective. I don't really care about what "experts" think either if I'm being honest. I think a poll of people who like to travel and eat is a pretty good gauge of what places people favor when it comes to food though. It took more than homers to rank New Orleans #1 in 2016. I know you're the only real expert though, so we'll say New Orleans is #2 behind whoever you deem the best.
Now excuse me while I go get a shrimp po-boy dressed and then top it off with a Hansen's Snoball.

Travel and Leisure Best Food Cities in U.S. Readers Poll
I used to wonder if people overstated how good the food in New Orleans is, but the more I visited other places, the more I realized why outsiders raved about New Orleans' food so much. There may be more variety in other places, but in New Orleans you can go to some place while you're on the go that looks like you could get mugged and shot if you don't get out of there quickly and end up feeling like you had a better meal (for 10 bucks) than you would have had if you were at some celebrated 5-star restaurant.
I love NOLA food but it's not in the same league as NYC. Rating it and Charleston above NYC is a joke. And to think you can't walk into a random place in the city that feels sketchy and not get a great affordable meal probably means you just don't know it or haven't done it right.

You obviously have never had a Snack Shack burger.

There has to be a per-capita factor in there. I mean, there is no way you can visit every restaurant in New York.
New Orleans, for a smaller city is phenomenal.
Austin, Santa Fe, Charleston, Savannah, and Portland can't compete with NYC for total number of restaurants.
Portland has some phenomenal choices and even if I went out to eath 3-4 times a week, I'd never run out of new places to try. One of my favorite things about the Portland food scene is the food carts. Many great restaurants in Portland started out as food carts. Many chefs use the food carts as a way to get a brick and mortar restaurant.

Actually, I think New York is similar to New Orleans when it comes to delicious hole in the wall places that you could get mugged walking in or out of. But not a lot of places are exactly like that (the food is still cheaper in New Orleans though).
Obviously, as far as scope and variety, it's hard to beat NYC. But as far as having consistently delicious meals in just about any joint, I personally would never say that New Orleans is not in the same league as NYC. And obviously many people feel that way looking at different polls and rankings, but to each his own. There are many great places for food and it's subjective, but this is not the first time Charleston or New Orleans has been ranked ahead of NYC for whatever reasons.
Charleston has been getting a lot of recognition for its growing food scene lately (they also have a lot of great seafood and people love seafood done really well).

NYC has, by far, the greatest number of restaurants. So you could declare it the winner based on that alone. San Francisco and New Orleans have the best for their size.

What people? You and two other NOLA homers? NY is not only the food capital of this country, it's one of the three food capitals of the world (with Paris and Tokyo).
You're delusional man.

My answer was always New York. The difference is you clearly have some sort of axe to grind when it comes to Nola food.

NOLA has great food. I eat in the city 4-5 days a week. But many other cities are on par and the yats act like it's impossible that any other town could compare to theirs. It's biased on a Sean Hannity level.

I love NOLA and think it does a wonderful job showcasing regional cuisine that simply isn't duplicated in any other corner of the world. Given its relative size, NOLA is quite impressive albeit a bit romanticized too.
What NOLA lacks is variety. This is where NYC, San Fran, Chicago, Miami (I know) and others outshine and surpass NOLA.

In that case, if I misread you then i apologize. I'm with you when you say it's NY and SF at 1 & 2. New Orleans holds up well, especially per capita, but there's really no competing with those two.

First of all, I was being sarcastic based on the Travel and Leisure readers poll link I posted that had New Orleans at #1 for the best city for food in the U.S. for 2016 (you're too uptight to notice though). I already said it's subjective. However, I guarantee you there aren't a ton of yats reading Travel and Leisure Magazine (which is based in NYC btw) out of their millions of readers. You can take up their "delusional" issues with them. People like what they like.
Also, you mentioned NOLA people thinking that no place compares to New Orleans food-wise. Although New Orleans is obviously unique, there is a number of great cities for food. It just depends on what people like individually as to what may be their favorite.
I don't work in the service industry and can't take any credit that the food industry receives, so it doesn't really matter to me. I just enjoy the food a lot as a customer and I'm not going to deny that many outsiders claim that New Orleans is their favorite city for great food.
