Wasn't quite sure where to post this, little off topic for the food board but I figured this is probably the most level-headed group of posters so I asked.
I've got a family member, young professional with a wife & 2 young kids, who has been offered a job in Zachary. What are some of the pluses & minuses of living there? TIA

Although you're close to BR, you'll feel light years away because you have to travel through NBR to get to anything in BR. You'll have to make Zachary friends because it such a PIA to get to Zachary from BR.

Had a good friend who moved there about 5 years ago. My wife and I used to go to dinner with them and our kids used to play together all the time. I have yet to see their house since they moved away.

Too far. At least Ascension and Livingston parishes have interstate accessibility, if moving to the suburbs is your goal.

I was born in Zachary at Lane Memorial Hospital in 1976. Lived there until high school then moved to Houston.

Can't say what it's like now, but I spent my summer days as a kid at Fennwood CC playing ping pong with a bunch of other kids my age. I lived in Newell St. and we had a BREC park at the end of it where we played whiffle ball on weekends ad nauseam. There used to be a big field (private property at the time) that had a big lake full of nutria rats that we'd shoot with BB guns. It was a huge plot of land that went all the way back to Rolins Road but from looking at satellite images now it looks like to be an entire neighborhood.

We'd rent VHS movies from Bronco Video, buy our groceries at Winn-Dixie, and get toys and other shite we couldn't afford at TG&Y.

Life was simple and fun. Best days of my life.

Over the years I hung around with Jeff and Ricky Davis (whose GF was stabbed to death while they were in a cemetery while "parking"), also Tip Tippy, David Welch, David Staid. No clue in hell what any of them are doing today.

Never lived in Zachary, but during my 'flood sojourn' I drove through everyday. Seems like a nice place to live. Abundant nice grocery stores, good restaurant selection. Far enough from Baton Rouge to still have the best of big city living if you want, far enough out to keep the trash away. Has a country suburban feel to it, but glimpses of small town attitudes which I found nice. As far as getting to Baton Rouge, Hwy 19 made for easy travel - just watch the speed cameras in Baker. Overall, I found nothing bad to say about it.

Sounds like you're a shitty friend. I grew up in Zachary and would go to B.R. all the time. Depending on where in B.R. you live, you're only 30-45 mins. away (unless you're caught in some horrible B.R. traffic).

Plusses:
Pretty good school district
Close enough to BR to be there quickly when you want to be (especially Downtown), but far enough away to avoid it.
Has a Sammy's and a new Walk-On's
Good traffic
good golf
not a lot of crime

Negatives:
you have to go to BR for any entertainment
pretty far from the Mall of Louisiana and the movie theaters
speed traps on state highways
a lot of rednecks

It's a plus if you never shop there, but a minus if you do. I never go there, so it wouldn't matter to me, but it would to some people. Not being close to a movie theater would be a bigger deal to me.

not a bad hopskip and away from BR. Takes around 20-25mins to get to downtown. If going down 19. Far enough from the riff raff that is NBR and EBR. Close enough to make a stop in if needed.

Houses there...if youre going to buy, buy in one of the older neighborhoods. You will get huge yards and nice sized homes. New developments like Americana are nice but sit on zero lot lines.

of all the places to be sentenced to in La., Zachary isn't bad at all. That said, why is he moving here? The negatives of this state so far outweigh any positives, I can't imagine why anyone would choose to move here.

Cool story!!! I worked with David S for 4 or 5 years. The last I knew he was working at the Refinery. small world. That sounds like how I grew up in Central.
