What is the deal with Calcium Ascorbate?

I buy these prepackaged pre cut apples from Publix. They are really good and at $3.49 per pack they are not too expensive, considering they are cored etc.

The only ingredients are apples and calcium ascorbate. I looked it up and it appears to be mostly used as a supplement.

Any insights?

I'm assuming it is to keep them from oxidizing and turning brown.

Right, but what is the stuff? Is it terrible for you? Good for you? Unknown? Controversial?

I know I can research, and I did a bit, but I am interested in people's opinions here. There are some on this board who know a lot about this sort of thing. And some who pretend.

It's basically vitamin C, stops the food from browning. It's not bad for you. I used to use ascorbate acid in salad dressing

Did I say something to offend you somewhere? Or are you just like this in general.

I buy them to eat at my desk over an afternoon so I am not sitting there with a half eaten apple.

I can see many other adjectives fitting in your post, but lazy? You call other people mentally retarded?

You didn't. Just wondering why you would go that route.

I prefer to get along and have a good time here, so I'd seriously be interested in your perspective.

Exactly. You get the same effect by drizzling lemon juice over the fruit. The calcium carbonate is just there to buffer the ascorbic acid. It's the active ingredient in Tums.
