My son is driving towards Memphis as I type this, and I am going to be getting him a hotel room using Hotwire - his Hotwire app on his phone isn't working, for some reason. He will want to go down to Beale St for some beers and food, so he wants to either walk or Uber down there. He doesn't want to spend too much on the hotel, since he will be back on the road tomorrow morning.

I have three questions:

What area of town should I put him in? I don't want to put him in the hood, but he wants a room that is not too expensive. Should have easy access to food/drink. I'm assuming West Memphis is a little rough. Other areas on Hotwire, besides downtown are Medical Center/University, Airport, East Memphis, Sycamore View/North Memphis.

Can anybody recommend a good place to eat for a 22 year-old? He would like a good burger or barbecue, most likely.

Where can he find some good craft beer options? One stop for both the craft beer and food would be ideal.

I really like the Midtown/Overton Park area.

Central BBQ, Interstate BBQ, Bar B-Q Shop, Payne's, Gus's

Wiseacre Brewery (I believe they have food trucks)

That seems to be closest to the Medical Center/University area.

It doesn't appear that Wiseacre is open on Sundays. Are there any taprooms that have Sunday hours in that area?

Memphis Made Brewing is open today. Midtown area, can hit up Central BBQ also. Usually good local beers on tap at Central. No idea on hotels in the area.

Eta: forgot there's a Holiday Inn right by the University of Memphis. Would be ideal.

Tell him to check out Loflin Yard downtown. Awesome new spot that is similar to Katy Trail Icehouse in Dallas. You've got to pay to get on Beale Street now btw. He'll enjoy Loflin as a young guy. Tons of girls, live music and drinks.

If he likes fried chicken at all, then Gus's is the only place to eat.

I got him a 2-star room in the Medical Center area. It turned out to be a Rodeway Inn. Looks like near the intersection of Bellevue and hwy 79. I think it's in between the Bar B-Q Shop and Paynes, basically.

I'm craving a Payne's pork sandwich now.

OK. Hotel is taken care of. Food - looks like Barbecue at Payne's or Bar B-Q Shop.

Most importantly, are there any good taprooms in the area?

Loflin Yard looks cool. Any other spots that would be going on Sunday night? He'll be there for one night, so is Beale Street happening on Sunday nights? Ideally, he would want a place where he can get a good local IPA and there would be some girls, live music, or some such thing...

Tell the boy to eat at Gus's as often as he can and that there is a flying saucer there to check out.

Great idea. I let him know.

He might stay an extra night in Memphis and/or Dallas. He has to be in Austin on the 23rd (to meet a friend). He's driving cross country to San Diego. I think he may get to Austin a day early and hang out there. If he drives to Dallas tomorrow, he would need to spend an extra day there. Or he may spend an extra day in Memphis.

I don't have a clue where that hotel is located. He should have just gotten a room downtown at the holiday inn select or the Hampton inn.

If he wants girls, music and local beer he needs to go to Loflin Yard. Beale street always has people on it. BB Kings has music every night and there's a cool bar that's small a dive-ish called the Absinthe Room.

He can always uber to midtown and hit up the square. Lafayettes offers live music and is pretty popular. For some reason females absolutely love Babalu.

Big time local bar downtown is Bardog. I'm sure he can pull some strange in that place.

Also BBQ Shop and Paynes are both closed Sunday. He's going to have to settle for Central which is still pretty good. There's one downtown but not by Beale. South Main district.

Sunday night it's jazz night at Ernestine and Hazels on South Main. I highly suggest he goes there for the beer, music and a soul burger.

It looks like it's a block from Central High School, on Linden Ave.

Thanks for the info. I will pass it on.

Damn. Yeah. Tell him to stay woke. That's not a good area at all.

Yeah, I did a Hotwire Hot Deal and I went down to 2 stars, even though I don't normally do that myself. He can handle himself.

ETA: He got to the hotel. He said it is on the edge of the hood. He said there are some nice buildings across the street that look like they have security. He said he doesn't feel threatened, at all. I think he's going to go to the Flying Saucer tonight.
