I've been trying to find local sellers to start doing a little more "support local". Can't seem to find if there are any local egg farmers to this area. I checked the Abita Farmers market and its typically just fruits/veggies/honey/jams.

Any suggestions?

Damn, had no clue how much cheaper local cage free eggs are than the mass produced store bought eggs. I'm happy I looked into this

Covington Farmer's Market has two vendors who sell local eggs I believe.

How much cheaper? I need someone on my side of town around Highland Road. I have a couple I use in the Felicianas and they charge $2.50 dozen, $3.00 for ex large.

And we go through about that amount too. Maybe 2 dozen depending on my wife's baking.

$2/dozen free range I see on the Northshore if you provide your own cartons....compared to $3.40 at Rouses for non free range (not even sure if that matters in eggs but it is worth noting).

I have several friends who save the cartons and give me. I trade them honey from wife's bees.

A free range pasture chicken egg is so much better than a store bought. If they sell meat chickens try them too. You will realize just how much different a chicken can taste. Old lady I buy from by St Francisville let's here's roam and man they are good. Best roasted chicken you will ever eat. Those are pretty cheap too.

Get two chickens and a chicken tractor. 1 egg per day per chicken.
Let them loose every once in a while and they will eat your weeds and bugs and go back to the tractor at sundown.

I live in a subdivision but that definitely crossed my mind. Neighbors are rather close for loud chickens. I'll have to read my HOA covenants to see if there is anything against having chickens

Hens are not bad at all. Don't get a rooster though. No need for him.

Tbh, dogs are more of a nuisance than 2 hens. I don't hear my neighbors chickens but I sure as hell hear all the damn dogs barking in the neighborhood.

Just do some research with keeping out predators and whatnot if you build the house yourself.

I want to say most neighborhoods don't allow it, but they're not loud and you can easily have them secretly I grew up with 7 of them, and I don't remember them ever making noise. I do remember my parents telling me that we weren't technically supposed to have them in the neighborhood.

We had eggs coming out of our ears with 7 chickens too.

In Baton Rouge you can have 3 chickens under an acre. Over an acre no limit. No roosters inside city limits.

I have a friend that has bees and three chickens in Broadmoor. Has a nice back yard that she built the coop in to blend in and it looks nice behind a wooden fence. Her bees were in the wall of the house so instead of killing them or smoking and moving she just bought a hive and they moved. Plenty of eggs and honey.

I have 5 hens I keep in my backyard. The neighbors don't even know their back there if I don't tell them.

It's pretty fun raising your own eggs, and my kids really enjoy having the girls as pets.

You still reading this board? I'm interested- need about 2 dozen/week. I'd buy 4 dozen at a time. Need to find someone closer to Covington

The person I found was in Hammond was selling for $2.00/dozen (me providing the cartons), but its kinda difficult since that is 30 minutes away.
