If he already has a large stock pot, then there is really no differnce at all.

I would thing the biggest difference is having a
MASH/TUN

Although I guess he could use that AG bag technique.

Yeah, thats a big difference too. But thats easy to put together at any point with an ice chest and a ball valve w/ screen.

I would think its harder than buying a big pot though.

Of course I drilled a hole in my pot and put a ball valve on it but that was still easier than getting all the right washers and stuff and hacksawing a ss tube. (of course Im putting a false bottom in next week)

Yeah, there are many things that are different for sure. But what I was getting at is that if he bought an all grain kit now, the only things he would be able to use at this point are things that come with a basic extract kit. A mash tun or a wort chiller are not necessary at this point and as you mentioned, it is a very add-equipment-as-you-go type hobby.

Making and ice chest mash tun is very easy. I have an old ghetto setup I've been using for a long time.

Are you making the false bottom too?

But not as hard as cutting the lid off of a keg and using that for a brewpot :)

This is what I use too, but I got mine for Christmas years ago pre cut. Did you cut one yourself? What did you use to cut it?

Used an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel to cut a rough hole in the top. Then I made radial cuts outwards every inch or so around the hole to the diameter I wanted. Took some vice grips and bent each of the flaps up and down a couple of times until they snapped off. From there it was just a matter of cleaning up any jagged edges with the grinding wheel and then smoothing it out with a flap disc.

Yeah, mashing and wort chiller seems a little advanced for right now. Right now i'm going pretty basic.

Nah ordered the false bottom.. Had a gift card to spend. I have a 10 gallon converted Igloo Cooler currently with a ss braid that filters.

My kettle is a 40qt ss pot with a weldless ball valve kit. I plan on getting a second kettle setup soon and put it on a double burner setup with the mash tun underneath gravity fed from the hot liquor tank and a wort pump running from cooler to kettle.

That sounds like a sweet setup. I have been doing the old single burner bayou Classic for 4 or 5 years now. I gravity drain from the mash tun into a bucket then pour the wort into the boil kettle. Not ideal, but it works.

Have you considered cutting the top off an old keg like Bald Eagle was describing? Much cheaper than a large SS pot. It also has the added bonus of being able to make 10 gallon batches that can be split between 2 yeasts for experimentation.

I just got Complete Joy of Homebrewing, How to Brew, and Designing Great Beers on Amazon. If you get them all together it's about $36.

Oh, does anyone have a good spreadsheet for tracking my brewing?

I would like for it to also have a section for testing with hydrometer and temps intermittantly throughout brewing.

Also, for my yeast starter, can i use a magna lite pot that I already have and just clean and sanitize it, or do i need to buy a new one?

Your yeast starter needs a large jar or something that can be closed off

Are you insistent on a spreadsheet? Or would a decent program/software do?

Try a restaurant supply store first - they'll almost certainly be cheaper than anything you'll find in BB&B.
