I want to have a smoker/BBQ pit built out of brick very soon. I'm in need of a drawing that I can use to get the brick layer to build for me. I don't want to re-invent the wheel so I'm looking for a design that's already being used. I don't want to have smoke bellowing out all over under the cooking/patio area at the house. I want to make sure I don't have this thing built from brick and it not work afterwards. Does anyone here have a home-made design? Or maybe know someone who does have a working unit!!!! I've found ideas on the internet but they work with just wood fired units. I would rather use combination of gas and wood than just using wood for heat and smoke. I'm checking out metal units on-line and seeing how I could maybe copy the basic design but I wanted to check out the rant first. If you have an idea please let me know something. Send email to jeffg@eatel.net. Thanks.

Whatever design you use the actual bricks taking the heat need to be fire bricks. The veneer can be regular.

I hope to have mine built by football/dove season. Don't have any prints as I've been building it in my head for a few years now. It is gonna have a smaller grill on one end with what is essentially a cajun microwave underneath, an approx 6' x 3' grill in the center and the smoke stack on the end. The smoke stack is going to be 3'x 3' on the inside, about 6' tall and will removable racks for smoking lots of different things, or take em out and smoke a whole pig. It's gonna be tight..

A few years back Bon Apetit magazine did an issue on chefs pits that had a few interesting brick pits, it may take a bit to find it but try a search there.

Home Depot has one design that is more of an open firepit type setup in front of the store. Doesnt sound exactly like what you're looking for but worth mentioning.

I saw some guys in the neighborhood using one. It looked fine but I wanted to set something up permanently in bricks.

These guys build a lot of outdoor smokers, grills and fireplaces.
LINK They even have a pretty cool outdoor pizza oven you can build around.
