"eat local" movement

As fiercely protective as most in Louisiana are of their culture and cuisine, I think the eat local concept could really take off if done the right way. The problem would be as a newcomer since most "mom and pop" operations already accomplish this, but with out all the flash and exorbitant pricing.

You know one thing that hasn't been discussed is the amount of great food that people cook at home. Also the amount of people that love to cook and would rather do that than go out. I think that complicates it too.

One of BR's problems is a fairly unsophistacted dining population. A large portion is not interested in fresh food, and is content with frozen food reheated in some fashion.

No doubt BR is about as sophisticated as a blank sheet of paper when it comes to food. (well anything really) But I think the BR market does simple food very well. Thus I think BR has a nice low/middle end restaurant market. Frankly, it is better than almost every where else I have lived.

exposure to different styles

Good luck with that. The root of that problem is way too deep to get into in this thread.

But to your point, there isn't even a good fish market in town. WHen I lived in Raleigh there was a place that two trucks come from the coast every day. What ever was brought in from the boats was what they sold. We had a great selection of fresh seafood. Oh yeah, and Raleigh as about 2 hours from the coast. About the same distance as BR.

BR has nothing like that. Shame too.

I've had plenty of bad $20 meals in BR

True, but I have had a hell of a lot of very good $8-$20 meals.

You lived here for college, industry, or government,” says William McGehee, co-owner of Tin Roof Brewing Co. “If you weren’t into those, you left.” McGehee and his lifelong friend Charles Caldwell launched their brewery in a deserted downtown warehouse in 2010. The duo are young, business savvy, and attuned to the nation’s changing appetites. They also, with brewmaster Tom Daigrepont, craft some outstanding beer.
thats a lie right there.
