Abstaing from meat and fasting are two different things. It's very simple, Catholics abstain from what's considered "flesh meat" in observance that Jesus gave his "flesh" for them. Basically they don't eat meat on Friday because it's like eating Jesus' flesh lol

this is a combo Catholic/LDWF question. Since the LDWF classifies reptiles and amphibians under fish laws, as opposed to game, frogs are ok to eat on Fridays during lent.

The LDWF carries a lot of weight with the Vatican, does it? Or do they get to go straight to Jesus?

Not eating meat in order to honor Jesus' sacrifice is what it says. The part about people basically eating his flesh was a joke.

It's not an honor, it's a small penance/sacrifice to observe his sacrifice.

So let's go stuff our face with 10 pounds of crawfish tails, salmon, frog legs, blackened alligator and boiled shrimp!

SACRIFICE!!!!!

You're right it's a pennance/sacrifice. I never said it was an honor for the people doing it. We're just splitting hairs now. You say to observe his sacrifice. I say to honor his sacrifice.

I'm not saying that it's not archaic. That's just the original intent and a lot of Catholics still recognize this and don't gorge themselves.

Many "fast" on fridays during Lent as well, just not on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

I was born and raised in a podunk town in Louisiana as catholic, so I know all the rules and regulations of lent. I just really got away from religion as I progressed and educated myself through and after college.

I support anyone to believe in any faith, but I also find many things people do to be silly. This is one. Similar to Muslims not eating pork. I feel bad for my muslin buddy. He has no idea what he's missing out on without bacon.

Born and raised catholic. Dad farms so we always had crawfish on Fridays. Since I've been out of my parents house I haven't done that obviously. It's the principle of sacrifice that a lot of Catholics don't get. Not sure if my family still does crawfish on Fridays but I'll choose to not partake if i happen to be home.
