I started drinking coffee about 5 months ago and am interested in getting a little deeper into it. Just looking for a small, single cup kind of thing. If it is travel friendly for my backpacking and camping trips as well as home use, that would be ideal.

This Prima press/grinder combo for the small, 300mL press and mini grinder look like a good deal, and something I can easily throw in my pack when traveling. My only concern would be the glass breaking.

Any recommendations are welcome.

ETA:

Any experience with this GSI outdoors personal press?

ETA: If you're going to be taking it to go, I would just grind a bag of beans prior to camping. If you're not in to that, they make wireless, handheld coffee/spice grinders you could use to grind the beans.

just make sure you get a ceramic conical burr grinder, with some adjustment on the grain size. You'll need to go with a larger grain size so you don't end up with a lot of coffee that doesn't get filtered down.

Biggest thing is water temp and letting it brew before pressing down. You dont want it boiling water... I typically get the water hot enough to steam just before boiling. If its boiling it will burn the oils in the coffee giving you a burnt taste.

Most press's are about the same. Just figure out which one works best for you on size.

I have the same Cuisnart grinder with an 8 cup Chemex that I got a couple of weeks ago after I broke my french press. No complaints so far.

I like my stainless steel press over my old glass one since it is a bit thicker and keeps heat better. Also don't have to worry about it breaking in a moving truck like my old one did.

Try an outdoor store that has hiking backpacking equipment as I have seen lots of French press coffee items to cater to the travel crowd

I have a Kona French press and a ceramic burr hand grinder. I realize you want a smaller press, but I recommend the Kona anyway. It's on sale at Amazon right now, too

2nd on the Freiling. Found a cheap, handturn grinder on Amazon and it works great for one or two people.

My press

Pros: looks nice; metal surrounds glass well for good protection; extra filter at pour spout to prevent any grinds from escaping; very sturdy plunger and overall design

Cons: metal base screeches when moved on countertop

I love this press overall, but that screech is quite annoying. I plan to put silicon on it to see if it will help.

this is my burr grinder

I have had this grinder for 2 1/2 years now, and it works perfectly. Setting the grind size is easy as is the cleanup. I highly recommend it.
