A beloved Lafayette restaurant scored the No. 1 spot for budget dining nationwide in the TripAdvisor 2016 Travelers' Choice Awards.

Olde Tyme Grocery beat out the competition in cities such as Los Angeles for the top spot, which is based on millions of reviews collected in a single year from TripAdvisor users worldwide.

The awards, given out over the last 14 years, recognize the top restaurants, hotels, things to do and more. Olde Tyme is also ranked No. 1 out of 450 restaurants in Lafayette by users of the travel review website.

Top Budget Dining Restaurants in TripAdvisor's 2016 Travelers' Choice Awards include:

Never understood the love for Olde Tyme. Their roast beef poboy consists of Manda deli roast beef with gravy from a packet. Fried shrimp poboy is ok, but nothing special.

Pop's is the best spot for poboys in Lafayette.

This, Olde Tyme is so overrated.

I actually know for a fact that this is false, and you don't know what you're talking about.

I agree that pop's makes a better poboy, however that has absolutely nothing to do with this thread and the trip advisor poll about:

Exactly, Pop's is good but it's 50% higher than Olde Tyme. Best secret is the seafood plate on Fridays.

I know it's budget dining but on average a half poboy from Pop's is only a dollar more than Old Tyme and so much better.

I disagree. You can get any of the regular menu poboys or a daily special with chips and a drink at olde tyme for $7.50 + tax at lunch. So approximately $8.10-$8.20. Not to mention after 5pm, you can get a whole special of the night (ham, turkey, sausage or roast beef depending on the night), for $6 flat.

You go to pops for lunch and get their cheapest poboy (which is I believe the crawfish boil sausage (one of my favorites)), with chips and a drink and you're over $10, maybe even over $11.

I won't even factor in that a half poboy at olde tyme is approximately 30% larger than a half at pops.

I love both places. They are very different from one another and serve their independent purposes very well IMO.

Yeah, if you get one of the specials from Old Tyme it's cheaper for sure. I just meant regular menu price for a poboy.

1) How do you know?
2) How donthey make it?
3) It really is laughable compared to Pop roast beef.

Just had a catfish poboy from there and was equally good.

To steal one from Fieri, that place is out of bounds.

No way a Lafayette spot is going to get any love on this board. Sad.

Update on how OTG gravy was made 20 yrs ago, not sure if this is how Murph makes it today. The gravy recipe has been consistent through the years and probably the same since the food is the same

They buy gallon size jugs of liquid gravy from Manda or their supplier. They heat it up on stove and then add water and corn starch for desired consistency.

Fwiw, Murph is a fraternity brother of mine, and I know several good friends who were the kitchen managers from 1989-1995

OTG has been a Lafayette favorite for decades due to its proximity to campus and sub $10 meals. IMO Pops serves a better RB poboy as I don't mind paying a few dollars more

The seafood poboys are the best in the state, especially the oyster.
